Not far east of the east switch of Sulphur, US-40 crosses over the tracks, going from the south side to the north side. You can see the overpass in the distance, as the Canyon Spirit continues the journey east to Denver. This is the first time I have shot an eastbound from this angle through here.

After an extraordinarily dry winter, the Colorado River is running rather low through Byers Canyon right now. UP 4296 and UP 4519 are the (temporary) power on the Canyon Spirit. The units are filling in for the typical GP40-3s, which are currently getting repairs done after striking a truck in Rifle, CO several weeks ago.

High above Byers Canyon, the eastbound Canyon Spirit climbs the grade along the headwaters of the Colorado River. Max speed for trains through Byers Canyon, which has some tight 10º curves, is 20 MPH.

Just east of the east switch of Flat, the eastbound Canyon Spirit is moving along at about 55 MPH, several dozen feet above US-40, which is down at to the left, out of the frame. The SD70Ms that the Canyon Spirit are borrowing from Union Pacific don't necessarily look the best, but it is great that they have an option available so the train can continue to run.

At the intermediate signal between Gore and Troublesome, the eastbound Canyon Spirit is on the move with a green signal. A few weeks back, the train struck an oil tar truck in Rifle, CO, damaging the two Canyon Spirit GP40-3s. Until repairs on those have been completed, the train is leasing two SD70Ms from Union Pacific.

At the east end of Gore Canyon, the westbound Zephyr is following around a very shallow Colorado River. Here at the east end of Gore Canyon, the land opens up into Middle Park, with relatively wide open spaces for the next 18 miles or so, until reaching Byers Canyon.

A UP passenger special, which is currently deadheading, is approaching a Diverging Approach (red over yellow) signal at the west end of Fraser on a beautiful Easter Sunday afternoon. The train will tie down in the siding at Fraser until Monday morning, when some passengers will show up and depart east.

Union Pacific has gotten rid of a lot of their passenger equipment. However, they still have two dozen or so cars on the roster, a dozen of which are on this passenger special that is headed for the siding at Fraser just ahead. UP usually does a pretty classy job running passenger equipment, and today is no exception with a pair of freshly-painted C44ACMs on the point.

On Easter Sunday, UP ran an eastbound OCS (Officer's Special) from Grand Junction, CO to Fraser, CO. The train did not have any passengers onboard, and was being relocated to Fraser for some special passengers that will board tomorrow (Monday). Here, the 12-car special rolls east at Sulphur with two very shiny C44ACMs leading. The second unit was originally delivered as an AC6000CW in November 2000.

I made the trek west over the Continental Divide to get a shot of the eastbound Zephyr with AMTK 100 leading. This is a specially painted P42DC, celebrating Amtrak's 50th anniversary in 2021. This is actually the first time I've seen it in person.

By now, you are likely familiar with Amtrak's Phase 7 paint scheme. This is the scheme that was introduced in 2022 and is the new "go forward" scheme for Amtrak, replacing the Phase 5 scheme that has been the primary scheme since 2000. Superliners never really received a Phase 5 scheme per se. They received the new Amtrak logo, but kept the Phase 4b paint scheme with two thin red lines and a thicker blue line. However, Amtrak has started painting a few Superliners in what will be considered a Phase 7 scheme for the passenger cars. The scheme is very similar to the Phase 4b scheme. The thick blue line has been made ever thicker, and the thin red lines in the middle of the car have been removed. There is a section of the line that is the new darker blue, and a few white separation stripes. The Amtrak name and logo is now directly above the door.

The westbound California Zephyr is running a little over two hours late as it approach its stop at Fraser. Weather in Nebraska delayed the train by a couple hours overnight, and it is now trying to make up the time here in the snowy high country.
