The crew on this westbound UP intermodal train get to see something they likely are not particularly used to see, and quite possibly were not expecting as a rerouted California Zephyr comes toward them on Main 2. The Zephyr is being detoured through Wyoming due to a wildfire in Colorado that has the tracks closed near Glenwood Springs.

A westbound UP stack train crosses over Remount Road west of Cheyenne on UP's Overland Route. The elephant-style intermodal train is a nice change of pace from the type of traffic common to Colorado, which sees far more coal and manifest traffic than intermodal. The train is being led by a Tier-4 credit ES44AH.

It took several years, but EMD finally got the SD70ACe-T4 out on the rails. It is a beefy looking unit, with a much larger long hood than an SD70ACe. This is no doubt to accommodate the equipment needed to meet Tier 4 emissions standards. This prime mover is actually a 4-stroke engine as EMD (Caterpillar) was unable to meet Tier 4 standards using a 2-stroke engine. One great thing is the return of the teardrop windshield on the UP models.

Amazingly, when traveling between Sidney, NE and Cheyenne, WY, there was not a single train to be found on the Overland! The first train encountered was this eastbound grain train at Borie a few miles west of Cheyenne. It was a good catch though as an SD70ACe-T4 was leading the train on Main 2.

An eastbound intermodal train, the third in the past half hour, charges west through Borie Jct (out of frame to the left) on Main 2. The train will stop in Cheyenne in order to get a crew change. The lead unit is an ES44AH, although UP designates it as a ET44AH-T4C. Basically, it is an ES44AH that was received as a Tier-4 "credit unit" after the Tier 4 deadline started.

Four units lead a westbound doublestack train on Main 1 west of Cheyenne. UP hauls a lot of green "EMP" containers on their intermodal trains, as is evident in this shot.

A westbound UP intermodal train heads west on Main 1 just east of Borie Jct. Note the top container on the first doublestack has a slightly different shape as it is designed to be aerodynamic and reduce wind resistance.

West of Cheyenne, UP has four main tracks (for a distance). Mains 1 and 2 follow a very different grade from Mains 3 and 4. The latter go to Speer Jct toward the Greeley Sub and the single main track (Main 3) that goes to Dale Jct. Here, the Cheyenne Frontier Days train backs down from Speer Jct on Main 3.

The lighting is just perfect for this view of the Cheyenne Frontier Days train as it backs down Main 3 from Speer Jct. For the eight mile reverse move, the train was good for 30 MPH, except through crossovers where it was restricted to about 15 MPH.

It is simply amazing that UP takes the time and money to keep steam running in 2018. UP 844 is a Northern-type 8-4-8 locomotive that was built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in December 1944 as the last steam engine delivered to UP. It ran in revenue service until 1959. In 1960, it was saved from scrapping, to be preserved. Soon after, it started running in excursion service and has now running much larger (and far more miles) in excursion service than it did in revenue service in the 1940s and 1950s!

A good, elevated roster shot of UP 1943 after Cheyenne Frontier Days was wyed at Speer Jct. The train is now backing up the eight miles to the depot in Cheyenne.

A look at UP 1943 as it blows out some exhaust, really throttling up to move the train up the grade around the west leg of the wye at Speer Jct.

With the 1.2% grade coming off the Greeley Sub and in to Speer Jct, UP 1943 throttles up to help out UP 844 in pulling the train up and around the west leg of wye.

With the Wyoming flag unfurled on the front of UP 844, the engine (and train) roll backward on the east leg of the wye at Speer Jct. It is, of course, necessary to turn the train around for the evening trip back to Denver. The nearest wye is at Speer, roughly eight miles away from the depot in Cheyenne.
