This allows trains that were on the Overland but are headed for Denver, such as this Z-Train, to head straight for Speer for their crew change from Mains 1 and 2. The ZLBDV (Long Beach, CA to Denver, CO). Traditionally, when you think of a Z-train, you probably think of intermodal cars (double stacks and piggy backs). This train does have those, but they are behind the auto racks, out of sight around the corner. The train is on the Borie Cutoff, which is a shortcut from the Overland main to Speer Jct where the Greeley Sub connects in. It is a beefy looking unit, with a much larger long hood than an SD70ACe. This is no doubt to accommodate the equipment needed to meet Tier 4 emissions standards. This prime mover is actually a 4-stroke engine as EMD (Caterpillar) was unable to meet Tier 4 standards using a 2-stroke engine. The first train encountered was this eastbound grain train at Borie a few miles west of Cheyenne. It was a good catch though as an SD70ACe-T4 was leading the train on Main 2. The train will stop in Cheyenne in order to get a crew change. The lead unit is an ES44AH, although UP designates it as a ET44AH-T4C. The train is on UP's busiest route...the Overland Route. Traveling on Main 2 at the moment, the train will change crews in Cheyenne and the new crew will keep the train rolling east toward Bailey Yard in North Platte, NE. If you look closely, you'll notice a track running across the picture coming out left from the near the signals. It was painted in a scheme reminiscent of Air Force One. It was so-painted in honor of the George HW Bush Presidential Library, which had a special section on trains (and their history) in America. Nearly three years later, I was finally lucky enough to catch this unit on the point of a manifest approaching Cheyenne on UP's Overland Route.
