The conductor on this southbound wind blade train has aligned the south switch at Longs Peak for the main after meeting a northbound manifest. The crew is now waiting to receive a track warrant from the Front Range Sub dispatcher so they can continue south toward Denver.

Have you ever wondered just how long one of those blades in a power-generating wind mill? Turns out, one blade is nearly as long as three GE units! The Denver-Laurel moves north (right-to-left) while a wind blade train waits to proceed south (left-to-right).

The northbound Denver-Laurel, with a BNSF "sticker unit" - the nickname given to the 25th Anniversary units BNSF has released that have stickers of logos of previous railroads - rolls in to the siding at the south end of Longs Peak to meet a southbound wind (blade) train.

As a wind train sits on the main at Longs Peak, you can see that the south siding switch has been "bent" (aligned) for the siding. The Denver-Laurel will be coming up and entering the siding in just a few minutes.

A southbound "blade train", loaded with wind generator blades, sits on the main at Longs Peak with a single unit on the point. The train is waiting for the Denver-Laurel manifest to get in to the siding. Once that happens, the blade train can get a warrant south.

The conductor on the Denver-Laurel is on the ground and has just thrown the switch at North Highland to align for the main. The power will make a reverse move to back on to the train after dropping off a few cars in the siding at Highland.

At the north switch of Highland, BNSF's Denver-Laurel manifest drops a few cars off at the north end of Highland. These cars will be picked up later on by the Longmont Switch, a local train that runs out of Longmont.

Larimer County Road 5 follows the tracks for roughly five miles south of the siding of Norfolk. The road is on the west side of the tracks, however, meaning it was time for an artsy backlit shot. The Front Range Explorer passes by a wide open field under hazy skies on its journey north.

North of the city of Wellington, CO, the Front Range Explorer special follows a gentle curve to the northeast. The train has made good time from Denver to Cheyenne and will only make one additional stop prior to reaching Cheyenne. The train will need to stop at the south siding switch of Owl Canyon as the switch is reversed for the siding.

3-way meets are not a particularly common thing on BNSF's Front Range Sub. Largely because the line has no signals and trains operate using track warrants. In this shot, the Front Range Explorer holds on the main at Longs Peak. The Laurel, MT to Denver, CO manifest just started pulling out of the siding south with a new warrant. A second manifest, the Cheyenne, WT to Denver, CO manifest, is slowly following the first manifest through the siding. In track warrant territories, sidings are typically "uncontrolled", meaning multiple trains can move on them, so long as they move slow enough to stop within 1/2 the distance they can see.

The High Iron Travels special excursion train, the Front Range Explorer, brought out a lot of railfans on this particular Friday! Two of them are seen here, getting a low shot as this southbound BNSF manifest rolls across East County Line Road at Longs Peak.

This southbound manifest is pulling into the clear in the siding at Longs Peak. The train is the Cheyenne, WY to Denver, CO local manifest. It is following hot on the heels of the Laurel, MT to Denver, CO manifest. Those of you familiar with the latest power will recognize the lead unit as a (brand new) ET44AC.
