Being the main that is further away from US-85, it can be easy to overlook it to a certain extent sometimes along the stretch south of Littleton. But when you do stop and check it out, it is well worth it! A southbound BNSF coal train is pulling hard on Main 1 (former DRGW main, now UP main), running south on the climb to Palmer Lake along the Rockies.

At the south end of Littleton near Chatfield Reservoir is Acequia. There are a few industries that UP's South Local will switch out here on Monday's and Thursday's. Today, however, is this southbound BNSF coal load, pulling hard in Run 8.

This is one of the many reasons why I live in Colorado! A snow storm from yesterday afternoon blew out overnight and left blue skies and a crisp morning. A southbound BNSF manifest is on the move near Titan Road south of Littleton on Main 1.

One last shot of the Pennsy Heritage Unit for the day...and, considering how it is in fact a Norfolk Southern unit, quick possibly the last ever! Who knows If I'll have the chance again. It was a fun chase though and I was glad I finally got to see at least one of the NS Heritage Units in person.

This was the proverbial "money shot" for the day of the Norfolk Southern "Pennsy" Heritage Unit. While it was disappointing that the heritage unit was on the point, it was nice that it was facing southbound. This picture was taken from the Titan Road overpass on the south side of Littleton. If you look closely, you can see two deer bouncing around on the far right side of the picture. One of these deer was just a jump away from never seeing another sunrise! Fortunately, it jump left instead of right, which would have landed it directly in front of the plow.

For southbounds, Littleton marks the location where CTC (and three main tracks) is left behind in favor of TWC/ABS (and only two main tracks). While southbounds may find themselves on any of the three tracks leading up to Littleton, south of Littleton they nearly always find themselves on Main 1. Such is the case here as a pair of GEs lead a BNSF manifest south on Main 1.

Just south of Mineral Avenue, this blade train is now in track warrant limits on Main 1 under the watchful eye of UP's DS-86. Another 39 miles to Palmer Lake and single track CTC.

Hooray! A GE unit running the way I remember from my childhood! The second unit in this consist was having some issues and putting out quite a bit of exhaust as this southbound manifest works out of the Littleton Trench.

This is a shot that deserves the title "The Right Place at the Right Time"! A southbound Light Rail train approaches the camera as a northbound train sneaks past heads toward Union Station. The Light Rail trains were just a bonus as I was waiting on the BNSF manifest in the distance!

Hopefully you aren't sick of all these Warbonnet shots just yet! Here is one final one taken two minutes before sunset. The train is on Main 1 and crossing over US-85 just north of Blakeland.

We are a bit south of the triple track and BNSF's Denver, CO to Pueblo, CO manifest is rolling along on Main 1. There was about 10 minutes of sun when I nabbed this shot.

Despite being a bit on the tattered side, these Warbonnets still look fantastic in the afternoon light. An interesting thing happened just after this shot. The conductor on the train came down and opened the nose door, clearly with the intention of trying to screw up my shot. I've heard of crews doing that before, but this was my first (personal) experience with it. At least I got the good shot before they did that!

With the sun getting rather low in the western sky, the Warbonnet leading this manifest finds a sunny spot as the train climbs out of the Littleton Trench about a mile away from the end of CTC and the start of ABS and Track Warrants.

An SD70ACe and a AC4400CW lead up a loaded coal train approaching Titan Road just south of Littleton. The train has 120 hoppers and four units for power. This is pretty typical for BNSF and the train won't make much better than 15 MPH for its trip up the Palmer Divide.

The overpass on Titan Road offered a great view of this southbound BNSF Denver-Pueblo manifest. Note the winterization hatches on the radiator fans on the leading SD40-2 and the SD60. Very common on Canadian Pacific units.
