With the implementation of the EPA Tier 4 standards in 2015, railroads have all but stopped purchasing new locomotives from EMD (Caterpillar) and GE (Wabtec). The Tier 4 locomotives available from both manufacturers are more expensive and more complicated, which has discouraged railroads from purchasing many. Most of the locomotives ordered new in the last decade have been "Tier 4 credit units". These are Tier 3 units (ES44ACs) that railroads have received from emissions credits. Both of the ES44ACHs (or ES44AHs) on this southbound coal load at Acequia are credit units, delivered in late 2023 and early 2024.

This southbound coal load is passing over the C-470 freeway and underneath the relatively new onramp from southbound US-85 onto eastbound C-470. The train is on Main 1, owned here by Union Pacific, and dispatched by BNSF.

An ES44AC and an SD70ACe lead a southbound loaded at the Black Thunder Mine in Wyoming in the Powder River Basin. It is likely headed to a power plant in Texas. The trees are still looking pretty good here Plum Creek south of Chatfield Reservoir.

A southbound BNSF coal load is hard at work on Main 1 at Acequia near Chatfield Reservoir. Pikes Peak is visible in the distance as the train passes by some trees, many of whom have lost their leaves for the year, but a few are still sporting fall colors.

AMTK 22 and AMTK 134 heads south on Main 1 of the Joint Line, just south of Acequia. Unfortunately, a few traffic lights through Littleton hemmed me up long enough to prevent the shot I wanted to get...but this one isn't too bad with the Front Range visible in the background.

This southbound grain train has had a short reprieve from the climb to Palmer Lake, but it is about to start up the 1.5% grade toward the top of the hill at Palmer Lake.

Bringing up the rear of this southbound unit grain train is a Canadian Pacific ES44AC and a BNSF AC4400CW. This same train has a Canadian National and CSX unit on the head end, making for a very colorful train overall. On this particular day, I saw the following railroads represented: Amtrak, Union Pacific, BNSF, Kansas City Southern, Ferromex, Canadian National, CSX, and Canadian Pacific!

If you were unfamiliar with the terrain here, you might think this shot was taken somewhere east of the Mississippi! After all, a CN/CSX lash up is rare enough, but it is almost unheard of in Colorado. CN 3368, an AC44C6M, and CSX 3293, an ET44AH, lead the way south on Main 1 in perfect afternoon light on Super Bowl Sunday.

I wanted to get a few shots of this southbound grain train as it is pretty rare to find either a Canadian National or CSX unit in Colorado, let alone seeing those two together! Longs Peak is clearly visible, snow capped, in the distance.

This southbound grain train round the curve from the east edge of Chatfield Reservoir. You can actually get a pretty clear view of the tracks climbing the grade, a slight angle compared to the reservoir wall.

A pair of SD70ACes lead a southbound coal load on Main 1 at Acequia. Off in the distance, you can see Longs Peak, of the four "Front Range" 14ers. This time of year, this area appears to be somewhat bleak as there are no leaves to be found on the trees. However, this is also a fantastic scene for fall colors, usually in October.

The lighting at 9:30am at the start of October is about as good as you can get along Main 1 just south of Acequia on the Joint Line. A very unique variety of colors, all very unusual in Colorado, on the point of this ethanol train.

Fall colors are starting to show up on the trees in the Denver area. A very colorful (and unusual) consist leads a unit UP ethanol train south on Main 1, just south of Acequia. The train will be interchanged with the Colorado Pacific at NA Junction southeast of Pueblo.

Near the north end of the Joint Line, a southbound BNSF coal train is taking on the ruling grade for the climb to Palmer Lake. The second unit on the head end, an SD70MAC, is burping up a bit more (visible) exhaust than is normal.
