CP 7007 and CP 8501 knock down a clear (green) signal at west Sterling. The train leaves restricted (yard) limits behind here and enters CTC for the trip to Denver. The AC4400CW is, as you can see, having some issues and the crew would receive permission from management to isolate the unit so it would stop loading and stop creating the smoke show.

I got a great tip about a westbound BNSF loaded grain train that was tied down in Sterling, but had a crew called for 12:30pm. The train actually originated in Canada on the Canadian Pacific and was turned over to BNSF at Sweet Grass, MT. The CP power was left on the train for its trip to Guernsey, CA. I made my way out to Sterling and found the train as it was departing from the yard shortly after 1:30pm. The second CP unit, AC4400CW #8501, was putting on a smoke show like it was a C30-7 from 1975!

The sun is shining hard off the side of BNSF 4727. The main reason I included this shot is to take note of the fact that the nose of this C44-9W is blank. Or, more specifically, it is simply orange. No cigar band or herald is on the nose. It is also interesting that a C44-9W, with DC-traction motors, is leading a coal empty. The unit will be taken off the train in Alliance, NE.

The sun is rapidly approaching the western horizon as a BNSF coal empty slowly pulls east toward a restricting signal at the west end of Sterling. Three units happen to lead this particular coal train this evening. The lead unit will be taken off the train in Alliance, NE.

Yard Shots BNSF
The setup in Sterling is something of an interesting one. This is the south (west) end of BNSF's Angora Subdivision, which started to the north in Alliance, NE. BNSF does not own any trackage west out of Sterling. For 23 miles between Sterling and Union, BNSF trains run on UP's Julesburg Subdivision. Interestingly, UP does not own any track west of Union, and in fact does not operate any trains west of Sterling. BNSF now dispatches the UP-owned 23-mile stretch of track. UP's Julesburg Sub continues east from Sterling and meets with the UP Overland Route in Julesburg, CO, 60 miles to the northeast.

In this shot, a BNSF coal load just had a crew change, and the outbound train is ready to depart west. The track(s) the coal train are on are still owned by BNSF. The track to the right is UP. The BNSF coal load will pull to the west end of Sterling to meet an eastbound coal empty before departing on the 23-mile of UP Julesburg track.

A pair of SD70ACes, leading a westbound coal load, crosses over the US-138 as the sun quickly moves toward the western horizon. The train is now moving at about 15 MPH as it approaches the restricted limits of Sterling.

At the east edge of Sterling, this training is coming to the end of the Angora Subdivision. Indeed, the crew is also coming to the end of their day. Sterling is an away terminal for crews coming from both directions. This crew will turn the train over to an outbound crew that will continue on to Denver. The crew on this train will stay the night in Sterling before returning home after the minimum 10 hours of rest.

UP 1828 is the power on UP's Julesburg Local, currently sitting in Sterling with no crew, waiting to head east. UP 1828 was delivered to UP in March 1975 as UP 3293. The snoot nose SD40-2 was recently rebuilt and is now designated as an SD40N.

In Sterling, CO, UP 1828 sits on the front of the Julesburg Local. This is a local that periodically runs the 60 miles between Julesburg, CO (from UP's Overland mainline) to Sterling, CO. The local picks up a bit of interchange traffic with BNSF in Sterling.

Yard Shots BNSF
After a quick crew change at the BNSF yard office a few blocks to the northeast, this westbound coal train is ready to continue toward Denver. The train had been a southbound on the Angora Sub, but has now switched to a westbound for the journey on the Brush Sub. The train is passing UP's yard office.

UP has a very minor presence in Sterling. They have a small, one-room yard office and (at this time) a single GP38-2 for switching. UP serves a few industries in Sterling, the cars for which are handled by a weekly local out of Julesburg, CO.

This southbound is coming off the south end of the BNSF Angora Sub and is entering Restricted Limits at Sterling, leaving CTC bhind. The track way off to the far right is UP's track which runs to Julesburg, CO and the Overland Route. That track only sees about a train a week, when a local runs from Julesburg to Sterling and back.

While there are no trains in this shot, I thought it would be worth including. This is looking northeast down UP's Julesburg Subdivision. This line connects in with the Overland route in Juleburg. Prior to being abandoned in the 1990's, this line continued southwest from Union, CO to Greeley, CO. It offered a more direct route from the midwest (North Platte, NE, etc) to Denver. However, today the line typically only sees a local that runs from Julesburg to Sterling and back.

This eastbound BNSF coal empty is slowly pulling into the yard in Sterling where it will wait for a fresh crew to take it north into Nebraska and eventually the Coal Creek Mine in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming.
