The sun wasn't at the best angle yet, so I settled for this artsy shot of a coal load descending through the S-Curve at the east switch of Toponas. This is one time when I wish I had a lens that could give me something between 135mm and 300mm!

I had expected to chase this train east as far as Winter Park on my journey back toward the Front Range. However, fate had other plans as the train struck some rocks near MP 147 west of Volcano. The crew was okay, but the train went on the ground and crews spent hours getting everything cleaned up.

I love spending time in the rural high country of Colorado. You get a very relaxed feeling as you pass places like the Egeria Park Roping Club in Routt County outside Toponas. UP 7084 and train are doing that exact thing on this Sunday morning.

About ten miles east of Phippsburg, this coal load is pulling hard up the 1.8% grade on the climb to Toponas. After reaching Toponas, it is a relatively steep descent down to Bond, with the grade getting reaching 2.36%.

There are some amazing loops and horseshoe curves on the Craig Branch between Bond and Toponas. One such horseshoe curve is here, about a mile west of the siding of Crater. The head end of UP 5948 comes around the curve on the right while the tail end DPU's enter Tunnel 49 on the left side of the image.

Just west of Toponas, UP 5933 passes a clear intermediate signal under partly cloudy skies. During this time of year, it is unlikely that the skies will stay clear all day long. Thunderstorms often move in during the afternoon hours.

Just above the loops at Crater, this westbound coal empty is making its way toward the Crater siding. It is a light Sunday on the Craig branch and this train will have no meets at Crater, Volcano, or Toponas. A clear shot into Phippsburg.

Just before entering canyons that are really unreachable (other than by foot or by train), this coal drag is approaching the east end of the siding of Toponas.

A loaded eastbound coal train struggles up the grade between Phippsburg and Toponas. Toponas is the summit on the Craig Branch.
