You can see the massive response of manpower and machines that have come to this location just east of Keensburg to rerail and cleanup a tragic derailment of the eastbound Zephyr. The train struck a semi at a grade crossing out of the frame to the left. The train was at track speed, about 79 MPH, when the semi was struck. The engineers in the lead unit were reported injured and taken to a hospital. There were no reports of any serious injuries amongst the crew.

Crews are working to "carry" an Amtrak sleeper east over the torn up track of a derailment that occurred roughly 10 hours earlier when the Zephyr struck a semi at a grade crossing. The haulers will carry the car east, back where the main track is still intact and place the sleeper on the rails.

After derailing and falling on its side, crews worked in the pre-dawn hours to rerail AMTK 816, placing it on a track off and away from the main track of the Brush Sub. You can see that there was pretty significant damage to the back half of the unit, as well as the engineers side of the cab. Crews will also soon work to rerail the transition sleeper seen at the top right of the frame.

AMTK 816, one of Amtrak's 40 P40DCs (later upgraded to a P42DC) was leading the eastbound Zephyr when it struck a semi on a grade crossing just east of Keensburg. The unit derailed and fell on its side. As you can see, it sustained some pretty significant damage, particularly at the back of the long hood.

The transition sleeper that was directly behind the baggage car sits with its doors open. The front truck has derailed and is on the ground. Soon, crews will work to rerail the car.

Crews slowly work to "walk" (carry) a sleeper car back across the torn up track to the section of track that is still in tact. You can see the back half of the train at the very top of the frame.

You can see a bit of damage on the front of AMTK 41, which was the second unit on the eastbound Zephyr when it struck a semi at a grade crossing. You can also see that the transition sleeper behind the baggage car derailed, but fortunately, stayed upright.

After striking a semi truck at the grade crossing at the top of the scene, the Zephyr derailed and tore the track up at the switch. About 10 hours after the derailment, crews are working hard to clean up the scene and get the Brush Sub running again.

The damage on the front of AMTK 41 is quite apparent after the Zephyr struck a semi truck about 10 hours earlier. Crews are working to re-rail the second sleeper on the train.

In the early morning light, a disastrous scene is revealed on the Colorado plains about 40 miles east of Denver. Last night, a semi truck (reportedly hauling milk) cross the grade crossing in from of the eastbound Zephyr. The train struck the truck, derailing both engines and several cars. All the cars remained upright. The engines did not. This morning, crews are working to clean up the derailment.

A pair of ES44ACs lead a westbound Z-train just west of Keensburg. This Z-train, which originated in Chicago and is headed for Denver, is the hottest train that runs in to Denver on either UP or BNSF. Amtrak actually ran through the siding at Keensburg so the Z-train could get back up to track speed more quickly once the Zephyr cleared.

After meeting a very late Zephyr at Keensburg, BNSF's Z-train from Chicago to Denver is approaching the "Keensburg Curve" just west of the west switch. There are a lot of JB Hunt and Amazon Prime containers on the train.

The eastbound Zephyr is running 12 1/2 hours late as it approaches the west switch of Tonville. The train departed Emeryville, CA almost 10 hours late, and lost more time enroute. The train is trying to make up time as best it can, moving along at track speed as it passes by the frozen pond. Three P42DCs are on the point today, and in addition to the baggage car, there are Superliners in tow.

A BNSF C44-9W has a long string of empty well cars south on the Greeley Sub. A storm front is starting to creep its way over the top of the Colorado Rockies. It is expected to dump around 4" of snow overnight leading in to tomorrow.
