The westbound Zephyr is making its scheduled stop at Denver Union Station in a scene that is now an urban jungle, radically different from how it looked 20 years earlier. The Zephyr has received all of its releases and will be ready to pull at its scheduled departure time of 8:46am. Note the A-Line and N-Line commuter trains sitting on the tracks to the left.

The westbound Zephyr is stopped on Track 4 at Denver Union Station for its scheduled station stop. Here at Denver, there is a crew change. The crew getting off the train has been on since Lincoln, NE. The new crew will take the train to Grand Junction, CO. In the foreground, an RTD A-Line train (from Denver International Airport) is arriving on Track 1.

The classic Union Station building, now declared a National Historic Landmark, has been surrounded by new buildings over the past 15 years. The westbound Zephyr is stopped on Track 4 for its station stop. An RTD commuter train is out of service on Track 6.

I have spoken to many railfans over the years that say Amtrak got it right with their first paint scheme in 1972. The bloody nose / pointless arrow Phase 1 scheme was (and is) quite unique, and I was very happy to catch the heritage version on AMTK 161 on Track 4 and Denver Union Station.

AMTK 174 wears the newest paint scheme Amtrak has to offer. The Phase 7 scheme, introduced in 2022, is the "go-forward" scheme for Amtrak for the foreseeable future after roughly 20 years of Phase 5 as king. AMTK 161, on the other hand, has the original Amtrak scheme. The Phase 1 scheme was introduced in 1972 and is often referred to as either the "bloody nose" scheme, or the "pointless arrow" scheme.

When train hall behind Union Station was rebuilt in 2010, a fuel tank was placed under the ground to allow for refueling of Amtrak without needing a fuel truck to be present. Diesel fuel is being pumped in to AMTK 174 from the tank during its stop at Denver.

Denver is a refueling stop for the Zephyr on the journey between Chicago and Emeryville (in either direction). An Amtrak service employee is in the process of refueling AMTK 161 as the train makes its station stop. Love the classic "pointless arrow" and Amtrak name on the side of the heritage unit.

A 21 hour late eastbound Zephyr (with a pair of great looking units) sits on Track 4 at Denver Union Station. The units are currently being refueled and the Superliners are being filled with water. Several of the Superliners were completely drained of water as the train sat at Fraser for 17 hours overnight.

Denver Union Terminal (RTD) Winter Park Express
All is quiet at Union Station, just 20 minutes before midnight on January 8, 2024. The eastbound Zephyr, which dropped off the Winter Park Express equipment here, was 3 1/2 hours late arriving in town. However, the Zephyr has now departed, leaving Union Station relatively silent, save for the sound of the P42DCs on the Winter Park Express idling. In the distance, you can see the red lights of an RTD A-Line commuter train that has arrived and is finished running for the night. Further in the distance, you can see the classic "Union Station / Travel by Train" neon sign.

The eastbound California Zephyr has completed its station stop in Denver for the evening and is starting to pull away on Track 4 in this timed shot. The Winter Park Express was just dropped off, and will remaining on Track 5 until Friday, when it makes its first run west to Winter Park!

The eastbound Zephyr on Track 4, led by AMTK 170, makes final preparations to depart east. The Zephyr just dropped off the Winter Park Express trainset, led by AMTK 142, sitting on Track 5. Once the Zephyr gets its mechanical release, it will pull away from the station, leaving the Winter Park Express equipment behind for the upcoming ski season. The temperature outside is a chilly 15°F (-10°C).

Looking away from Denver Union Station, we see three reds for Mains 4, 5, and the lead to 6 and 7. These signals (and switches) are controlled by RTD's Denver dispatcher.

The eastbound Zephyr arrived in Denver 3 1/2 hours late this evening, but it had two extra P42DCs and five Superliners in tow. That trainset is actually the Winter Park Express! The Zephyr set out the WPE on Trak 5 at Union Station. The Zephyr then put its power back on the train on Track 4. AMTK 142 and AMTK 192 will be the power for the Winter Park Express, at least at the start of the season. It is a rather cold 15°F (-10°C) on the platform at Union Station this evening.

Here is a scene that looks radically different from how it would have appears 15 years ago! The catenary around Union Station for RTD Commuter Rail trains looks like something from Chicago or the Northeast. Buildings have also shot up all around Union Station. And of course, "train hall" has been completely rebuilt. The Zephyr is backing in to Track 4, the standard track for the Zephyrs station stop.

The morning Zephyr is backing up toward its stop at Denver Union Station. The canopy of the station is visible in the distance. On either side of the Zephyr are the commuter rail tracks for Denver's Regional Transportation District (RTD). The commuter rail is all electrified, so there is catenary over the tracks providing power.
