A quick look at the new Phase 7 paint scheme applied to Superliners. As has really always been the case with Amtrak's Superliners, little changes except for the stripe on the sides. As you can see here, the red and white thin lines, and thicker blue line (from the Phase 4 scheme) have been replaced with a single thick line that changes color along the length of the body.

Hoses with potable water are connected to each of the Superliners on the morning Zephyr, filling them up with water that will be used for drinking, sink, toilets, etc on the journey west toward Emeryville.

Denver is the longest stop the Zephyr makes between Chicago, IL and Emeryville, CA (whether headed east or west). With Denver being roughly the halfway point, all the Superliners are filled with water (as seen here), the engines are fueled, are other maintenance tasks take place.

Amtrak's Pacific Bend Pacific-series sleeper car sports my personal favorite of Amtrak's seven paint schemes, Phase 3. This is a Budd-built sleeper, originally built and delivered to Union Pacific in 1950. It spend roughly 20 years running on UP's "City" trains before being turned over to Amtrak in 1971.

From the time the Rio Grande Zephyr starting running in 1971 when Amtrak formed until 2010, the Zephyr (whether it be the Rio Grande Zephyr or Amtrak's California Zephyr) typically used Track 1 at Union Station. However, with the building of the new commuter rail infrastructure, commuter rails needed Tracks 1-3 (and Tracks 6-8). Consequently, "heavy rail" is restricted to using Tracks 4 and 5. The Zephyr, as seen here, typically uses Track 4. The Winter Park Express (when in season) typically uses Track 5.

AMTK 171 and AMTK 45 lead the Zephyr as the train makes a reverse move into Track 4 at Denver Union Station for its morning station stop. Denver is the longest stop for the Zephyr between Chicago and Emeryville. The train will hold here for a little over an hour (as it is arriving a bit early today). Each Superliner will have its potable water topped off and the P42s will be refueled, among other maintenance tasks.

The westbound Zephyr is backing into Denver Union Station amongst the numerous catenary lines in place for RTD's various commuter rail trains, including the A-Line to DIA (closest two tracks), the B-Line to Westminster, the G-Line to West Arvada, and the N-Line to Thornton (all on the furthest two tracks). Amtrak's Pacific Bend is on the tail end of the Zephyr this morning.

A few Amtrak crew members watch as the Winter Park Express equipment is set out on Track 5. The train will start running on December 19th with five Superliners (four coaches with a lounge car in the middle). In January, two more coaches will be added to the train. You can see the westbound Zephyr sitting on Track 4 to the left. After positioning the Winter Park Express on Track 5, the two lead P42DCs will move back over to Track 4 to pick up the Zephyr for the trip west to California.

It's not too often you see a quartet of P42DCs on the Zephyr! In truth, only the first two P42s here are the power for the Zephyr. The train departed Chicago yesterday with the equipment for the Winter Park Express. The last two P42s and the five Superliner beyond are all equipment for the Winter Park Express, which starts running next Friday.

When pulling out of Track 4 to move the Winter Park Express equipment over to Track 5, the derail out of Union Station was not aligned. One of the engineer's from AMTK 199 is on the ground and will hand-throw the derail. An RTD N-Line train is arriving Union Station to the left as a G-Line train is arriving to the right.

This morning, the westbound California Zephyr showed up in Denver with equipment for the Winter Park Express! The train backed into Track 4 and dropped off the passenger cars (and baggage car) of the Zephyr. Here, the first two P42DCs are the power for the Zephyr. The second two and the five Superliners behind are the Winter Park Express. The Winter Park Express will be set out on Track 5.

The Rocky Mountaineer is getting close to the end of its 2025 season. It is not quite there yet though, as it sits in Track 5 at Union Station. The train is nearly completed loading and is set for an on time departure at 9am. RMRX 8600, a leased SD40M-2, is leading the train today, along with one of the two Mountaineer GP40-3s.
