According to some thermometers in the area, the temperature outside is a scorching 101°F (38°C) as the Rocky Mountaineer rolls east through Arvada between Simms Street and 72nd Avenue. One of the RM GP40-3s is current down for maintenance, so RMRX 8600 (leased SD40M-2) is leading the train.

With thunderstorms building to the north, the eastbound California Zephyr is about 50 minutes late as it rolls through Arvada. As we move closer to summer, the heat has been increasing, and UP has been putting out a lot of 10 MPH slow orders due to the possibility of sun kinks in the rails.

BNSF's Provo-Denver is relatively short today, but still running in a 3x2 configuration. Despite being slightly shorter than normal, the train is still primarily composed of tank cars as it rolls through Arvada on the final 10 or so miles of its trip.

Two units, an NS "catfish" and a BNSF Heritage 2 unit, bring up the tail end of BNSF's Provo-Denver. The Norfolk Southern unit is called a "catfish" as the white stripes on the black unit kind of give the appearance of a catfish. As the train rolls by, the owner of the field works to mow the grass.

A trio of SD70ACes lead BNSF's Provo-Denver eastbound through Arvada. The train spent about four hours tied down in the siding at Rocky, waiting for a fresh crew to take the train the rest of the way into Denver.

Afternoon clouds roll through the area as the Rocky Mountaineer heads east on the main through Arvada between Leyden and Arvada. RMRX 8021, the other GP40-3, is in UP's North Yard, receiving some maintenance. In the meantime, The RM's leased SD40M-2 (ex-SD45), RMRX 8600, is leading the train east.

A long string of tank cars loaded with waxy oil rolls east through the heart of Arvada, led by an SD70ACe. BNSF and UP both run oil trains on the Moffat that load at the Wash transload facility near Wellington, UT. UP seems to run a few more trains than BNSF, but catching either is not uncommon.

In the cut between Carr Street and 66th Avenue in Arvada, an eastbound BNSF oil train heads east with three units on the point. DS-380 was concerned the train may not be able to make Denver before the crew went dead (ran out of hours), but the crew assured DS-380 that they'd be able to make it. Indeed, the train was running close to track speed...about 40 MPH...as it headed east here. They did indeed make Denver.

A single DPU, facing into the train, brings up the tail end of this eastbound MGJNY in Arvada. This particular unit has been rebuilt as a C44ACM, but was in fact originally delivered to UP as an AC4400CW in September 1996.

This eastbound train might look like a coal train, but in fact it is UP's MGJNY (manifest). These IPPX hoppers have likely been stuck in long term storage either somewhere in the Grand Junction yard, or in a siding in the Utah desert. Where are they headed now? Not sure...

A C44ACM and an AC4400CW lead the MGJNY through the cut in Arvada between Carr Street and 66th Avenue. The first unit was recently rebuilt at UP's North Little Rock shops. UP 6410 was originally SP 327, delivered in scarlet and gray in July 1995.

From a railfan "keeping an eye on the rails when I can" perspective, it seems as though UP has been running more trains on the Moffat lately. Note only has there seemingly been an slight uptick in oil train traffic, but I have noticed several coal trains run on the Moffat in the last 10 days as well. Here, an eastbound oil train, with three GEs on the point, is approaching the west end of Leyden.

This GP40-2 (now designated as a GP40N after UP did some rebuilding) is no stranger to these rails! It has been roaming on the Moffat off and on for 53 years! It was delivered to Rio Grande as DRGW 3105 in April 1972. Today, it is leading the West Local back toward North Yard with a string of 41 gondolas in tow.
