UP's thrice-weekly MGJNY runs west on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday and returns back east on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This morning, the manifest is in its final 10 miles as it approaches the grade crossing at Simms Street in Arvada. There are only two units on the train today as it is a (relatively) short train.

A pair of P42DCs (both in Phase 5) are power on a typical Zephyr consist this morning as the train passes by Oberon Lake #1 in Arvada. The Zephyr is roughly halfway between the control point at Arvada (CP DS007) and the east switch of Leyden (CP DS012).

A trio of SD70ACes, elephant-style, lead a relatively short Provo-Denver manifest. The train is just east of Leyden, crossing over Church Ditch, a man-made irrigation ditch that originates from Clear Creek in Golden.

While the GP30 will always be my favorite four axle unit, the GP60 is a close second. Alas, of the nearly 200 GP60s on UP's roster (all inherited from Southern Pacific and Rio Grande), none typically spend time in Denver. It was great seeing UP 1100 on the MGJNY this morning, which has been working in Grand Junction, likely headed to North Platte for a 92-day inspection.

Seven units lead the MGJNY this morning, though several of them were likely pulled out of storage from Grand Junction. UP is a rebuild program where they are turning old GEs (C44-9Ws and C44AC-CTEs) in to C44ACMs. It is possible some of these units are headed for such a rebuild.

UP 6055 leads six other units on a length manifest through the cut in Arvada, where the tracks have turned from southeast to almost due east. It is only 73°F (23°C) right now, but it is setting up to be a scorching hot day, with a high getting close to 100°F (38°C) by the afternoon.

A rare visitor to the Moffat to be sure, MRL 4303 was the trailing DPU on this eastbound BNSF manifest. The train is crossing Simms Street in Arvada, headed for BNSF's 31st Street Yard. BNSF took over the MRL on January 1, 2024. Since then, MRL units have started to roam the BNSF system.

On January 1, 2024, the lease that created the MRL on October 31, 1987 was terminated early. In 2022, BNSF agreed to pay MRL $2 billion to terminate the lease early. The lease was originally created for 60 years, set to expire in 2047. With BNSF taking over the MRL, the MRL power (now owned by BNSF) left Montana to explore the BNSF system. MRL 4303 happened to be the rear DPU on BNSF's Provo-Denver this afternoon. BNSF will eventually repaint the units, and the classic blue and large "W" will fade into rail history.

With MRL (Montana Rail Link) now owned by BNSF, former MRL units are roaming free on the BNSF system. One of the 29 SD70ACes happened to be the trailing DPU unit on BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest on this July afternoon. Eventually, no doubt, the MRL units will be painted orange. I will certainly miss the distinctive blue scheme.

An MRL SD70ACe, now owned by BNSF, brough up the end of this eastbound Provo-Denver. In another 12 miles or so, the train will reach BNSF's 31st Street Yard and the power will be taken off and serviced.

A former Espee AC4400CW (SP 246) is leading the only UP manifest that still runs on the Moffat, the thrice-weekly Grand Junction, CO to North Yard, CO. The train is parallel to Oberon Road, just out of view to the left. It make not appear to be a manifest, based on the coal visible in the shot, but the MGJNY frequently hauls coal ahead of the general manifest cars.

The last unit on UP's MGJNY is UP 2010. This unit was the 100-year celebratory unit for the Boy Scouts. However, the various stickers and whatnot that were included on the unit have since been removed.
