In the midst of golden hour, about 30 minutes before the sun dips behind the Rocky Mountains, the Winter Park Express cruises along at track speed in the Denver suburb of Arvada.

UP 6023 is rolling west at a restricted speed of about 15 MPH. There is a spurious track occupancy between the intermediate signal at MP 9.7 (at Kipling Street) and the east end of Leyden. Consequently, the signal at MP 9.7 was red. Since it is an intermediate and not an absolute signal, the crew does not need authority for the dispatcher to pass, but they do have to continue at restricting speed, prepared to stop short of any obstructions on the track. The train is crossing Church Ditch, approach a clear (green) signal at East Leyden.

The Zephyr is running just a couple of minutes late as it passes by Oberon Lake 1, out of sight behind the camera. The train is moving at track speed, around 45 MPH, which is kicking up plenty of snow from the ground. Indeed, the powder appears to be semi-enveloping the Superliners.

AMTK 167 leads AMTK 182 and the morning California Zephyr through the middle of Arvada. Specifically, the train just crossed Carr Street and is running alongside Oberon Road. The elementary school I attended is located just a few blocks north of this location. When I was kid, I would go out at recess, climb the monkey bars, and hope to see the top of a few Rio Grande tunnel motors leading a train over this stretch of track!

The final shot of 2024 for me! Six BNSF units - all GE except for a single SD70ACe - lead a westbound oil empty through Arvada on the way west to Wellington, UT. From there, the power will be changed and the train will return east in a 3x3 configuration. That, of course, will happen in 2025.

After waiting for about 15 minutes at Arvada (CP DS007), this BNSF oil empty gets its turn on the single track main of the Moffat to head west. As is pretty common on BNSF oil trains, six units are on the head end of the train, though only three of the units are actually online and loading. The trailing three are currently just catching a ride.

After several hours of overcast skies this morning, the sun has largely broken through the clouds to light up the three units on the point of this eastbound loaded oil train, wrapping through the cut around MP 9 in the middle of Arvada.

Between Arvada and Leyden, in the middle of Arvada, the tracks go through a cut that is surrounded by some trees and gives it a real rural look, despite being in the city. UP 5919 leads a loaded oil train through the cut, headed toward Bypass 2 in Denver for some power changing and a crew change.

In an unusual move, the westbound Zephyr has a trio of P42DCs on this particular morning, with AMTK 79 (Phase 7) on the point, followed by AMTK 207 and AMTK 168. All three units are elephant-style. Incidentally, within a month or so, Siemens Chargers are likely to start showing up on the Zephyr. Solid sets of P42s may be nearing an end.

The morning westbound Zephyr departed Denver right around 40 minutes late this morning. Here, the train is headed west through the heart of Arvada, having just crossed Olde Wadsworth.

A single C44AC-CTE brings up the tail end of UP's MGJNY as it rolls along Oberon Road in Arvada. The train is only going about 15 MPH and is actually slowing as the train has a red signal at CP DS007 (Arvada). The train won't quite come to a stop as it'll get a light at Arvada before it gets there.

A bit of snow is stuck to the plow of this C44ACM, leading the MGJNY east through Arvada. These three GEs departed with the train the night before from Grand Junction for the trip east to North Yard. For the last few years, this has been the only UP manifest that runs on the Moffat.

A single AC4400CW brings up the tail end of BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest as it rolls east from Leyden. The falling snow is quickly obscuring the view of the manifest, now 11 miles away from its destination in Denver.

Just east of Leyden, a trio of GEs leads a relatively short Provo-Denver manifest eastbound toward Denver. The manifest is right around 4,000 feet long. Most BNSF manifest are, on average, right around a mile long. The scene is a cool mix of fall and winter mixed together as many trees and shrubs still retain their red and yellow leaves. It has been a few years since this much snow has fallen in early November.
