Winter Park Express

The morning Winter Park Express, running about 15 minutes late (and seen here around 22 minutes after sunrise), heads west. The train just passed the high/wide detector at MP 8.4. The detector specifically checks to see if anything is sticking off the side or if there is a car that is too high to fit through the tunnels in the tunnel district. If something is sticking out, it'll break the wire on the detector and inform the dispatcher (and the train, via radio). No problems this morning though!

Just west of the grade crossing at Carr Street is the "high/wide" detector at MP 8.4. The wires around this detector equals the tunnel with the smallest clearance. If anything is hanging off a car on a train, it'll trip the wire. The train would then stop to check to find the car is cannot fit through the tunnel(s). In the distance, the westbound Zephyr is approaching.

You can see what remains of part of the wire for this high/wide detector in Arvada. The detector is used to check for cars on trains that cannot clear tunnels west of Denver. Indeed, on this day, the detector was tripped and the wire was broken. The detector immediately informed the crew (via an automated radio message) and the train stopped to wait for a carman to correct the problem before continuing west.

This high/wide detector, also known as a shifted load detector, is just west of Carr Street in Arvada. It has a wire that runs around trains. The wire marks the minimum clearance for the tunnels west of Denver. If anything hits the wire, it is an indication that the train will not clear one or more tunnels. Such was the case on this day when DRGW AX-41, a Jordan Spreader, hit the wire and tripped the detector. And man, did it ever trip it! It ripped the wire apart on this side of the rail. You can see the wire now danging over the top of the tracks. Maintenance of Way is coming to repair the detector before the next train rolls through.

Running just a few minutes behind schedule, the westbound Zephyr crosses Carr Street in Arvada and also passes through the high/wide detector at MP 8.4. This detector has a wire the runs up, across, and down around the track. The wire is the size of the smallest tunnel. If a car is too large to fit through a tunnel, it'll hit the wire and activate the detector. This ensure no cars will strike the inside of a tunnel.
