Shortly past sunrise, the sun glints off the Superliners of the westbound Winter Park Express, just west of Leyden. Clear skies and the early morning create a perfect gold hour.

The sun is just a few degrees above the eastern horizon as the Winter Park Express heads the opposite direction, away from the rising sun and toward the Rocky Mountains and the Winter Park Ski Resort.

I felt like this shot almost feels like the Winter Park Express actually originated from the sun! The Ski Train is right on time here as it charges west out of Leyden. In fact, the train will make up a little time and arrive at the base of the slopes in Winter Park 12 minutes early.

UP's MGJNY met the Winter Park Express at Rocky and is now heading the rest of the way into Denver. The train is less than 3,000 feet long this morning. Other than the coal at the front, most of the rest of the train are cars from the Potash Local that runs out to Moab from Grand Junction. If you look off in the distance and slightly up, you can see the head end of an eastbound BNSF in the siding at Plain.

For the past decade, The US EPA has required that diesel locomotives built meet the (very strict) Tier-4 emissions standards. As a result, Class 1 railroads have largely started rebuilding older locomotives as rebuilds are not subject to the same standards. It is cheaper than buying Tier-4 compliant locomotives, which, even after their initial sticker price, are more expensive (and more complicated) to maintain. However, UP has purchased 107 Tier-4 compliant SD70ACe-T4s. UP 3054, on the point of the MGJNY, is one such unit.

UP 9738 is a C44-9W that has been in long term storage in Grand Junction. It is likely going to be rebuilt as a C44ACM and put back into active service.

An empty BNSF coal train comes around Big Ten Curve. BNSF has a contract with the Valmy power plant in Nevada. The train loads in the Powder River Basin and then head west on the Moffat (loaded). After unloading, it returns east (empty). I would typically use the drone for a shot around Big Ten, but some stronger winds made me decide to just get the shot from the ground, the old fashioned way.

Four units on the head end and a single DPU provide power on this eastbound coal empty. As light as the coal empty is, I'd bet only the first two units and the DPU are actually online for the journey. The train is wrapping through Little Ten Curve and on the main here at Rocky.

A single ES44AC brings up the tail end of this eastbound BNSF coal empty. Prior to the start of this Valmy coal train a few years ago, I never thought I would see a coal load running west on the Moffat or, as in this shot, an empty coal train running east.

A Phase 7 P42DC leads the westbound Zephyr across the Carr Street grade crossing and through the high/wide detector at MP 8.4. The detector has a wire suspended around the track. The closest the wire gets to the track matches the closest a tunnel wall (or ceiling) gets to the track. If anything is sticking out too far (or high), it'll break a wire, indicating the car will not clear a tunnel.

AMTK 167 leads AMTK 182 and the morning California Zephyr through the middle of Arvada. Specifically, the train just crossed Carr Street and is running alongside Oberon Road. The elementary school I attended is located just a few blocks north of this location. When I was kid, I would go out at recess, climb the monkey bars, and hope to see the top of a few Rio Grande tunnel motors leading a train over this stretch of track!
