It is about 20ºF and snowing lightly just before 7pm at the east end of Leyden. This coal load took the siding to allow a marginally late Zephyr to run around it. You can clearly see the red dwarf on the siding for the coal load and the yellow (which is actually a flashing yellow) signal on the main. Note the cars, streaking past on 80th Avenue in the distance.

For you car lovers out there, the [only] three cars on the West Local on this day were all of Milwaukee Road heritage. Looking a little worse for wear, the local is taking them to the Rocky Spur to deliver them to TXI Aggregate.

This GP40-2 is no stranger to these rails! Not long ago, this was DRGW 3126...one of the last GP40-2s delivered to Rio Grande. As time marches forward, nearly every former Rio Grande unit still rostered by UP has received a full repaint. UP 1348 is no exception! Just like the numerous MP, WP, MKT (and numerous others) from UP's past, armour yellow dominates. In the distance, you can see Ralston Valley High School, which was built at the beginning of the 21st Century.

UP 1373 is one of only three GP40P-2s once rostered by Espee (built in November 1976). It was used by Espee in commuter rail service in the San Francisco area (as SP 3198) and had a steam generator included (hence the extra "P", for "Passenger") for power. That said, it hasn't been a real GP40P-2 in nearly 30 years! The steam generator was removed in June 1985. Espee renumbered it SP 7601 and placed it in general freight service. The extended enclosure for the generator remained, however...and remains to this day!

The light package on the nose of this unit makes its heritage pretty clear! This GP40-2 was delivered to Espee in March of 1980 as SP 7667. On this gloomy day, it leads a short West Local west on the main at Leyden.

Once upon a time, the local was called the Rocky Local (DRGW and Espee days) and ran west out of North Yard on Tuesday's and Thursday's. It would serve some industries in Arvada, Mesa Oil on the Chem Spur west of Leyden, and Rocky Flats. When Rocky Flat shut down and was subsequently dismantled and cleaned up, there was a spike in rail traffic. In 2005, the West Local ran five days a week and would take as many as fifty cars out to the site.

Today, with the Rocky Flats cleanup project complete and Mesa Oil moving to a new location in Denver, the one or two industries in Arvada and a single industry on the Rocky Spur (TXI Aggregate) are all that remain for the local to serve. Now, the local runs only on Wednesdays. And, as you will can see in this picture, the three covered hoppers the local is hauling to TXI is a far cry from the fifty cars from almost a decade ago.

You can pretty clearly see the grade westbound climb on the approach to Leyden. About a mile to the east, the tracks "drop off" and descend back toward Denver...whose skyline is visible to the left. Meanwhile, a very short West Local prepares to knock down the signal at east Leyden.

There is a good two-mile stretch of straight track east out of Leyden. Makes for a nice telephoto shot of the West Local on the approach to the east switch of Leyden.

This westbound coal empty was apparently having some issues with its lead unit when it arrived in Denver. A very clean UP 7796 (an ES44AC - or a C45ACCTE as UP designates it) now leads as the trains highballs on the main through the curve at the east end of Leyden.

Despite the fact it is a few degrees shy of freezing at 30ºF, the sun is doing a nice job of melting away some of the two inches of snow that fell the day before. A tardy Zephyr is doing a nice job of kicking up some of the powder still left on the ground as it approaches a clear signal at east Leyden.

It has been nearly a decade since EMD first introduced the SD70ACe. Over 1,200 have been produced since then, several hundred of which have been delivered to BNSF. An example of three sit here, tied down in the siding at Leyden. While GE still outsells EMD, perhaps EMDs (relatively) new owner Caterpillar can help turn that around.

This train hadn't turned a wheel since I was on my way in to work this morning. At that time, the last crew was still onboard, getting ready to tie the train down. There was also nearly an inch of snow on the ground, all of which had melted by this point over eight hours later.

The morning of the first appreciable snowfall found this BNSF coal load hanging out in the siding at Leyden. BNSF's Denver Yard didn't have room for this train and, due to the crew having less than an hour left on their hours, the train was tied down shortly after this picture was taken.

A trio of SD70ACes make up the power on this eastbound coal load at Leyden. Considering that about 60% of BNSFs roster is GE (and only 18% of its purchases in the last ten years have been from EMD), finding an all-EMD consist like this is something of a rarity!

This BNSF coal train was loaded at the Wildcat Mine on Utah Railway not far from Helper, UT. BNSF and Utah Railway have a good working relationship and occasionally send trains east from Helper to Denver and points beyond.
