I really like the shot looking down toward the west end of Leyden. In the distance, you can see the hoppers that are welded to the rails on the side of Big Ten Curve. Interestingly, I just shot UP 5895 (the trailing unit) three days earlier on the point of an eastbound coal load!
This train came from Kinder Morgan in Houston, TX and is headed for the loadout at Energy. Somebody is going to have a little hostling of power to do in Phippsburg. Energy Mine does not have a balloon track, so the power on the tail end when the train arrives becomes the lead power when the train departs!

Once upon a time, the local was called the Rocky Local (DRGW and Espee days) and ran west out of North Yard on Tuesday's and Thursday's. It would serve some industries in Arvada, Mesa Oil on the Chem Spur west of Leyden, and Rocky Flats. When Rocky Flat shut down and was subsequently dismantled and cleaned up, there was a spike in rail traffic. In 2005, the West Local ran five days a week and would take as many as fifty cars out to the site.
Today, with the Rocky Flats cleanup project complete and Mesa Oil moving to a new location in Denver, the one or two industries in Arvada and a single industry on the Rocky Spur (TXI Aggregate) are all that remain for the local to serve. Now, the local runs only on Wednesdays. And, as you will can see in this picture, the three covered hoppers the local is hauling to TXI is a far cry from the fifty cars from almost a decade ago.

UP 1373 is one of only three GP40P-2s once rostered by Espee (built in November 1976). It was used by Espee in commuter rail service in the San Francisco area (as SP 3198) and had a steam generator included (hence the extra "P", for "Passenger") for power. That said, it hasn't been a real GP40P-2 in nearly 30 years! The steam generator was removed in June 1985. Espee renumbered it SP 7601 and placed it in general freight service. The extended enclosure for the generator remained, however...and remains to this day!

This GP40-2 is no stranger to these rails! Not long ago, this was DRGW 3126...one of the last GP40-2s delivered to Rio Grande. As time marches forward, nearly every former Rio Grande unit still rostered by UP has received a full repaint. UP 1348 is no exception! Just like the numerous MP, WP, MKT (and numerous others) from UP's past, armour yellow dominates. In the distance, you can see Ralston Valley High School, which was built at the beginning of the 21st Century.
