While it is rather uncommon to find coal train on the Moffat these days, it is even less common to find an eastbound empty coal train...but that's exactly what we have here. After meeting the Zephyr, this eastbound BNSF coal empty is pulling back out onto the main at East Leyden.

After meeting the westbound Zephyr here at Leyden, the dispatcher got the switch thrown and an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) set up for this BNSF coal train very quickly. Here, the eastbound is approaching said signal, ready to roll back out on to the main track.

Highball Leyden! the standard pair of P42DCs lead a baggage car and seven Superliners west through the east switch of Leyden as the way west. The Zephyr lost nearly three hours between Omaha and Lincoln last night, so it is doing its best to make up some time.

A three hour late Zephyr is doing its best to make up time as it approaches a clear (green) signal at the east end of Leyden, crossing over 80th Avenue.

An eastbound UP oil train passes the east switch of Leyden at CP DS012 with a BNSF C44-9W the second spot. That BNSF unit will be cut out in Denver so it can be returned to BNSF.

RMRX 8020 is a rebuilt GP40, now considered a GP40-3. It was delivered to the Baltimore and Ohio railroad in April 1969. After its service on the B&O, it spent time with leasing company GATX, Burlington Northern, leasing company CORP, and leasing company HMBX, before finally landing a spot on the Rocky Mountaineer roster. This is the first revenue run of the Rocky Mountaineer ("Rockies to the Red Rocks") for 2023. The train just knocked down a clear (green) signal at Leyden.

Five red HLCX units look a bit unusual on the Moffat, training behind three UP units coming east out of Leyden and crossing 80th Avenue. Note a UP MOW truck sitting on either side of the tracks, waiting to pick up some track and time after the manifest clears.

It has been raining off and on all day, which has helped to really saturate the colors as the MGJNY comes rolling east out of Leyden. This is now one of only six (regularly scheduled) manifests that UP runs on the Moffat in the course of any given week.

At the east switch of Leyden, just about nine miles west of UP's North Yard, a trio of GEs lead the thrice-weekly manifest from Grand Junction to North Yard tries to stay ahead of the rain as storm clouds roll east off the Rockies.

These days, it is a little bit of a rarity to find a trio of C44-9Ws leading a BNSF train. It is far more common to find some ES44s in the mix! However, the such a trio of 90s power leads here, second out being a former Santa Fe Warbonnet.

Life has been going through its typical ebbs and flows that everyone experiences, which is why I have not made it out much in 2021 to get trackside. However, it was great to be taking some pictures again on this morning, capturing the Denver-Provo at Leyden just after 10am.

Winter is refusing to let go in Colorado as evidenced by the snow still covering the ground. Meanwhile, the westbound BNSF Denver-Provo knocks down a clear signal at the east switch of Leyden. The train is the first of two westbounds coming out of Denver back-to-back this morning.

One of my favorite spots to shoot in the Denver area is at East Leyden. A few good trees and interesting railroad equipment in the shot, with the east slope of the Rocky Mountains in the background. A trio of SD70ACes lead the MGJNY out of Leyden on the main, UP 1996 being second.
