These days, it is a little bit of a rarity to find a trio of C44-9Ws leading a BNSF train. It is far more common to find some ES44s in the mix! However, the such a trio of 90s power leads here, second out being a former Santa Fe Warbonnet.

Life has been going through its typical ebbs and flows that everyone experiences, which is why I have not made it out much in 2021 to get trackside. However, it was great to be taking some pictures again on this morning, capturing the Denver-Provo at Leyden just after 10am.

Winter is refusing to let go in Colorado as evidenced by the snow still covering the ground. Meanwhile, the westbound BNSF Denver-Provo knocks down a clear signal at the east switch of Leyden. The train is the first of two westbounds coming out of Denver back-to-back this morning.

One of my favorite spots to shoot in the Denver area is at East Leyden. A few good trees and interesting railroad equipment in the shot, with the east slope of the Rocky Mountains in the background. A trio of SD70ACes lead the MGJNY out of Leyden on the main, UP 1996 being second.

UP 1996 is in brilliant late afternoon November light as the MGJNY passes by an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) signal on the main at the east end of Leyden. The train made great time from Grand Junction. I did not think the train would make it before sunset, but was pleasantly surprised when it did.

At the east switch of Leyden, BNSF's Provo-Denver continues east after knocking down an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) signal. The train will diverge from the Main to Main 2 at Arvada. BNSF 3941 is a Tier-4 compliant ET44C4.

Seconds before the sun completely dips behind the Rockies to the west, the eastbound Zephyr knocks down an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) signal at the east end of Leyden. After a two hour delay at East Portal, the crew is doing what they can to make up time and get passenger in to Denver and points east.

Two SD70ACes and an AC4400CW lead an eastbound MGJNY out of the siding at Leyden. This is the only UP manifest (along with its westbound counterpart) that UP still runs on the Moffat in 2020. Traffic between Denver and Salt Lake now runs via the Overland in Wyoming. This morning, the MGJNY had to wait in Leyden for a (very late) eastbound Zephyr and an (on time) westbound Zephyr before getting the light here to continue east.

A lot of track equipment is rolling east on this work train that originated in Oakland. The train is ultimately heading for Pueblo, although for exactly what purpose, I do not know.

An SD70ACe with a rather shoddy flag leads an eastbound work train out the east end of Leyden. The train originated in Oakland, CA and is headed for Pueblo, CO.

As has been the case in previous years, the Winter Park Express has three coaches with a wrap applied for advertising to help cover the cost of running the train. The wrap and the lack of a baggage car is about all that separates this consist from the California Zephyr that will be following in another hour or so.

It is only 14°F, a freezing but clear morning, for the second run of the 2020 Winter Park Express. The rising sun has cast a beautiful orange light on the Denver skyline, but the tracks at Leyden are still cast in the shadows for the train.

It is shaping up to be a glorious sunrise as the second run of the Winter Park Express (Ski Train) approaches the east switch of Leyden. For the fourth year in a row, Amtrak has put together six coaches and a lounge car to take eager skiers up to the slopes at Winter Park.

UP 1989 led this coal empty in to Denver from the Greeley Sub. However, because the train entered North Yard for an air test, it departed with UP 1989 trailing. Unfortunately, because the (new) leader on the opposite end stopped loading. While three units was enough for the train to make it up to the Moffat Tunnel (it was configured 2x2), the train could not run 1x2, which is what it would effectively be if the crew isolated the lead unit that was not loading. The crew believed they could reset the fault causing the train to not load, so it would depart Leyden shortly after this shot was taken.

It's been several years since I've caught UP 1989 on a train (other than Cheyenne Frontier Days). But it was the rear DPU on this particular Friday, sitting on the main at Leyden in great morning light.
