20-25% of the time, BNSF's Provo-Denver will tie down in the siding at Rocky rather than making it all the way to Denver. There are a number of reasons this might happen. The top two generally are either that the yard in Denver is not yet prepared to receive the train, and/or the crew on the train does not have enough time left on the clock to make it in to the yard before "dying" (hitting their hours of service). Here, one such Provo-Denver sits idle in the siding at Rocky with no crew, the derail at the east end of the siding set.

A somewhat interesting trio of GEs (a BNSF ET44C4, a CSX AC4400CW, and a BNSF ES44AC) lead BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest. The train is currently stopped in the siding at Rocky. The train has no crew at the moment. A crew will show up to take the train in to Denver, but it could be anywhere from 4 to 24 hours before the crew actually appears.

The back end of BNSF's Provo-Denver wraps through Little Ten Loop, sitting on the siding. Note the rather unique paint scheme of the first DPU on the tail end of the train.

BNSF 5857 and BNSF 4729 bring up the tail end of BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest. BNSF 4729 is referred to by many as a "Frankenbonnet" due to its extremely unique paint scheme. Sometime in 2019, the long hood was replaced with the long hood from a Warbonnet for reasons unknown.

Any modelers out there that want a unique, real world paint scheme to try their hand at? How about BNSF 4729? This unique unit originally wore the Heritage 2 (orange and yellow) paint scheme until sometime in 2019. The entire long hood was removed when it was in the shop. The removal of the long hood is quite common as it exposes the entire prime mover. Sometimes, the long hood will be replaced with one from another unit. Perhaps the hood itself needed additional repairs. When the long hood from a unit with the same paint scheme is used, it likely is not noticed. However, for whatever reason, the long hood from a Warbonnet was used on this particular unit.

The long hood of BNSF 4729 was swapped out sometime in 2019 when the unit was in the shop. A long hood from a Warbonnet must have been the only long hood available at the time, creating this interesting clash between Warbonnet and Heritage 2 paint. Modelers, go crazy!

Since the Provo-Denver was stopped in the siding, I decided to take advantage and get several different shots of BNSF 4729, sporting a paint scheme that mixes the Heritage 2 scheme and the Warbonnet scheme. It is somewhat surprising that, after four years, BNSF has not yet paint or swapped out the long hood on the unit to get back to a uniform scheme.

A look at the engineer's side of BNSF 4729, which has a weird kit-bashed mix of Heritage 2, Warbonnet, and even a little bit of original Heritage paint! Various exterior panels have been replaced and the panels that replaced them had different paint schemes.

In the past eight years, GE has produced 1,117 "Tier 4" units for US railroads, including 300 for BNSF. That may seem like a lot, but when you consider the immediate predecessor (ES44AC/DC/C4) had 6,451 units produced, you can see the difference. The train held for about 15 minutes at east Leyden while waiting for maintenance to clear up.
