Since last weekend, both P42DCs of the Winter Park Express were changed out. AMTK 142 and 192 were in charge of the five car train last weekend. This morning, AMTK 153 and 27 are running on the Ski Train. It is a bit late (due to a mechanical issue), but is now charging west through the OS at East Leyden.

The five car Winter Park Express Ski Train passes through the OS at the east end of Plain on its way west to Winter Park. Note the snow-covered asphalt road to the right which will serve the new Canyon Pines neighborhood once houses are built.

Amtrak's short Winter Park Express Ski Train passes through a very wintery scene on the main track at Plain, just east of Rainbow Cut. There are 266 passengers on board the train this morning, ready for a fun day on the slopes at Winter Park.

At the west switch of Plain, the westbound Ski Train is on a clear (green) signal and is about to start west in the Tunnel District after it enters in to Tunnel 2, just ahead.

Just east of Tunnel 3, the westbound Winter Park Express enters in to view from a cut as it makes its way west through a powdery Tunnel District. High in the distance, clouds work to try to push their way over the mountains and out toward the plains.

There is plenty of snow to be had on the ground (and hanging in the trees) in the Tunnel District as the westbound Winter Park Express heads toward the east portal of Tunnel 8. Not far behind the train, you can clearly see the west portal of Tunnel 7.

Eight units lead an eastbound MGJNY (manifest, Grand Junction to North Yard) on the main just west of Leyden. Only the first three units are online and loading. The trailing five are just be repositioned to Denver. If you look off in the distance along the base of the mountains, you can see the Moffat mainline between Tunnels 2 and 5.

Just west of the west end of Leyden, an eastbound UP manifest crosses the fill in some fantastic morning light. This train frequently descends the front range in the morning hours, although frequently it is in pre-dawn hours. Was nice to catch the train, with eight units on the point and several cars of lumber, in the light.

An eastbound UP manifest has a single ES44AC as a trailing DPU as the train rolls down the main at Leyden. The DPU is crossing over Indiana Street, a road that the City of Arvada would like to widen to four lanes, but will require the replacement of this bridge as it is only wide enough for the current two lanes.

The westbound Zephyr is 5 hours and 15 minutes late today, after experiencing some issue (not sure exactly what) between Lincoln, NE and Hastings, NE the previous night. The train is crossing 66th Avenue in Arvada, about 10 miles west of Union Station, hidden amidst the skyline in the distance.

The westbound Zephyr makes a fairly rare afternoon departure from the Denver area as it is running 5 hours and 15 minutes late. Trying to make up time, the train is moving at track speed parallel to Oberon Road in Arvada. Oberon Lake #1 is visible on the opposite side of the tracks.
