I love that you can still find spots in the urban Denver-Metro area to find shots like this! Colorado definitely still has that western feel to it. The horses here were far more interested in me and what I was doing than the westbound Zephyr gliding by at track speed in the background.

A trio of horses are far more interested in the fresh hay than in the westbound Zephyr approaching in the background. After a brief delay for a coal trains (whose crew was running short on time) at Arvada, the Zephyr is only off schedule by about ten minutes.

Once SP 347, UP 6365 is doing its part to push on the tail end of the westbound MNYRO near Chemical, in between Leyden and Rocky.

I might be a smidge biased, seeing as how I've lived my entire life in the Denver area, but I think Denver has a great looking skyline! And a great place to observe it is along CO-72 just west of Leyden.

It has been a great week or so for me as far as unpatched Espee units go! There are only eleven such unpatched AC4400CWs left on UP's roster. Eight days ago I caught SP 343 on the MNYRO at Leyden. Today, I caught SP 192 as a swing helper on an eastbound coal load.

The silver sides of the aluminum gondolas show up really well in the early morning sunlight. If you look really closely, you can notice a string of light power heading west through Clay in the distance!

An eastbound coal load is about ten miles away from its crew change in Denver. It is a windy but mild morning for the last day of winter.

On this particular day, AMTK 184 (the Phase IV heritage unit) was supposed to be leading the Zephyr. Indeed, it had been leading from Chicago to Denver. However, mechanical issues caused the unit to be taken off in Denver and replaced with the "auxiliary unit" that is kept in town. So, here is plain old Amtrak heading west out of Leyden.

So close, and yet so far away! The (partially obscured) manifest in the foreground is the MRONY. Off in the distance, you can see the last three Superliners on the Zephyr. If the Zephyr had been 45 seconds slower or the MRONY 45 seconds faster, I could have had a nice shot of both trains. As it stands, the two trans are still nearly 10 rail-miles apart and in the same frame!

Great afternoon sun lights up the tail end of this eastbound coal train. The train will go in to Bypass One and have the mid-train swing helpers cut out. The next crew will take the train east to Sharon Springs, KS.

SD9043MACs used to be pretty common on coal trains in Colorado. However, they have become something of a novelty in the last few years. Reportedly they have had some reliability issues. However, one still pops up once in awhile. Such was the case on this Saint Patrick's afternoon.

It has been a busy morning on the Moffat and this is the fourth train to leave Denver in the past two hours! This particular coal empty went into to North Yard instead of running through one of the bypass tracks. This was likely done either because it was having power issues or the power arrangement needed to be changed. The train started in Cook, IL and is headed for the Bowie Mine on the North Fork Branch.

Increasingly, UP is running manifest on the Moffat with DPUs. This Sunday was no exception as a sole C44AC-CTE brings up the rear of the eastbound Roper to Moffat manifest.

The third train of the morning on the Moffat and not one of them has been a coal train! The eastbound MRONY-25 is heading for the west switch of Leyden. It will run through the siding and continue on to North Yard.

After meeting the Zephyr at Rocky, this eastbound coal load is now headed east on an extremely windy morning. Gusts of wind were exceeding 60 MPH!
