One of the most popular locomotives ever produced, a pair of SD40-2s lead the west local (with six covered hoppers) east at the intermediate west of Leyden. 31 railroads in the United States and Canada purchased SD40-2s. Of the nearly 4,000 units produced between January 1972 and October 1989, the majority of them are still in service today in once capacity or another.

Following not too far behind a work train, this hyrailer is also looking alongside the rails, perhaps helping the MOW crew to let them know if any unneeded tie plate were properly collected. He is also likely just performing his normal patrol functions, looking for things like heat kinks or broken rails.

This work train is slowly moving to the east, away from the camera, as the crane operator picks up tie plates from the right-of-way that will not be needed for the upcoming rail replacement right here. Note the makeshift tent covering part of teh last car.

A ton (quite literally) of steel tie plates are piled up in this open gondola. The tie plates are new, but are not needed here at this spot on the main. You can see the tie plates that will be installed here, laying along the ties beneath the train.

A UP crane operator sits atop a gondola, collecting tie plates from along the right-of-way. The crane has an electromagnet attached to the end, and the controller can activate the magnet to pick up tie plates, then turn off the magnet to drop them into the gondola.

A single AC4400CW is the power on a work train on the main between Leyden and Rocky. Similar to road construction, maintenance on the railroad tends to be nonstop.

A UP crane, mounted to the top of a gondola, works to collect excess new tie plates that are along the right of way. The rail laying along the tracks is a new rail that will be installed. Tie plates were dumped along the track, but were not counted out. After laying out the needed tie plates, the excess are now being collected. You can see one of the tie plates hanging on to the outside of the magnet lifting it.

A seven car work train with a single AC4400CW works along the main between Leyden and Rocky. The crew is about to start picking up new tie plates that are along the right-of-way, in excess of the number that will actually be needed for the new rail that will, at some point, be replaced.

BNSF 704, sporting one of the most popular paint schemes in railroading (the Warbonnet Scheme) is the second unit on this eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver. The Warbonnet does have an order battery cover behind the cab. This component is compatible with all like models, and is frequently changed out. Also of note, half the nose has just be straight up repainted in red. Regardless, the unit still looks mighty good, nearly 30 years after the BNSF merger.

A pair of C44-9Ws, one in Heritage 2 paint and one in the Warbonnet scheme, lead two ES44ACs as this eastbound manifest approaches the switch to the old Chem Spur. The spur has now been out of service for about a decade.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Rocky Mountaineer
Sunday morning means we find the westbound Rocky Mountaineer's "Rockies to the Red Rocks" just west of Denver. The nine car train (plus a power car on the very end) appears to be sold out, which is great news (of course) for the train. Tonight, passenger's will stay at the Hotel Denver in Glenwood Springs, continuing on the Moab, UT tomorrow.

When Amtrak first released their Heritage units, AMTK 184 wore the Phase 4 heritage scheme. In 2023, AMTK 184 went to Beech Grove, Amtrak's maintenance facility. When it emerged, it was again wearing the traditional Phase 5 scheme. However, a few months later, AMTK 164 was released, now wearing the Phase 4 heritage scheme. Here, AMTK 164 is second out on the westbound Zephyr.

When I first saw UP 9603 through the viewfinder, I was a bit surprised as I was pretty sure this fell in the number range of the few C44-9Ws that UP has on the roster. I wondered what a DC unit was doing on an oil train. Then, I noticed the cabinet behind the cab on the conductor's side. That long cabinet is where the DC/AC power inverters are located. Turns out this unit is a rebuild! It was originally a C44-9W, rebuilt as a C44ACM. In fact, this unit was originally SP 8139.

An AC4400CW and an SD70ACe lead an eastbound across the now-defunct switch to the Chem Spur. The paint scheme on UP 7265 looks quite good, and I wish UP had go with this for the new standard rather than the scheme they have adopted in 2023 that removes the wings from the nose and places a flag on the sides of the nose.
