A Canadian Pacific ES44AC is spending some time on BNSF, currently on the head end of BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest. It is now only a matter of time before this unit is repainted in its new CPKC paint scheme.

BNSF's eastbound Provo-Denver manifest passes by the intermediate signal at MP 14.6, just west of Leyden. The train will have a clear shot to run the rest of the way in to Denver after meeting the Rocky Mountaineer at Plain.

The Winter Park Express (Ski Train) departed from Denver Union Station nearly two hours late this morning. It seems the reason might be due to a mechanical issue with one of the coach Superliners. The train, which had the standard six coaches yesterday, only has five this morning.

The morning Zephyr is moving along at track speed west of Leyden on a frigid January morning. The distance, you can see the surface of Welton Reservoir has half frozen over with ice. The temperature is a chilly 6°F (-14°C) at the moment.

UP's MGJNY met the Winter Park Express at Rocky and is now heading the rest of the way into Denver. The train is less than 3,000 feet long this morning. Other than the coal at the front, most of the rest of the train are cars from the Potash Local that runs out to Moab from Grand Junction. If you look off in the distance and slightly up, you can see the head end of an eastbound BNSF in the siding at Plain.

I felt like this shot almost feels like the Winter Park Express actually originated from the sun! The Ski Train is right on time here as it charges west out of Leyden. In fact, the train will make up a little time and arrive at the base of the slopes in Winter Park 12 minutes early.

Even though this MGJNY is not especially long, the train still has six units on the head end and a single DPU on the tail end. The train passes by the metal beast that has been rumored is scheduled for demolition.

It is cold and overcast this morning as the westbound Zephyr passes through western Arvada, just west of Leyden. Despite severe weather in the mid-west, the Zephyr is right on time this morning.

The westbound Zephyr was delayed by about two hours when departing Chicago the previous day due to mechanical issues. Later on the journey in Nebraska, between Hastings and McCook, the Zephyr was delayed another three hours due to a broken rail. The mid-west has been experiencing some extreme cold weather, and it has caused some havoc on the rails. Trying to make up time, the Zephyr is headed west from Leyden, just over five hours late.

The Zephyr is running on time, roughly two hours behind the Winter Park Express that came through earlier. The Zephyr has a very standard consist with a pair of P42DCs, a baggage car, and seven Superliners as it heads west between Leyden and Rocky.

Decided to go for a bit of an artsy shot here, shooting from the "dark side of the tracks". I bumped the contrast and decreased the exposure of the train, creating a bit of a silhouette shot with the Denver skyline in the distance.

The full length of this BNSF unit oil train is clearly visible here, as it stretches roughly a half mile on either side of the intermodal signal at MP 14.5, in between CO-72 and the Arvada neighborhood of Leyden Rock.

An eastbound BNSF manifest rolls along CO-72 in western Arvada. Arvada is continuing to expand, even today. A new neighborhood of multi-family homes has started construction on the north side of CO-72. You can see the first few (blue-ish) units center-right in the frame.

DOTX 220, catching a ride on the back of the westbound Zephyr, is a Federal Railroad Administration track inspection car. The FRA has both manned and unmanned cars at its disposal, and this 1954-built Pullman car is an example of a manned car.
