A UP crane, mounted to the top of a gondola, works to collect excess new tie plates that are along the right of way. The rail laying along the tracks is a new rail that will be installed. Tie plates were dumped along the track, but were not counted out. After laying out the needed tie plates, the excess are now being collected. You can see one of the tie plates hanging on to the outside of the magnet lifting it.

BNSF

BNSF 704, sporting one of the most popular paint schemes in railroading (the Warbonnet Scheme) is the second unit on this eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver. The Warbonnet does have an order battery cover behind the cab. This component is compatible with all like models, and is frequently changed out. Also of note, half the nose has just be straight up repainted in red. Regardless, the unit still looks mighty good, nearly 30 years after the BNSF merger.

When Amtrak first released their Heritage units, AMTK 184 wore the Phase 4 heritage scheme. In 2023, AMTK 184 went to Beech Grove, Amtrak's maintenance facility. When it emerged, it was again wearing the traditional Phase 5 scheme. However, a few months later, AMTK 164 was released, now wearing the Phase 4 heritage scheme. Here, AMTK 164 is second out on the westbound Zephyr.

When I first saw UP 9603 through the viewfinder, I was a bit surprised as I was pretty sure this fell in the number range of the few C44-9Ws that UP has on the roster. I wondered what a DC unit was doing on an oil train. Then, I noticed the cabinet behind the cab on the conductor's side. That long cabinet is where the DC/AC power inverters are located. Turns out this unit is a rebuild! It was originally a C44-9W, rebuilt as a C44ACM. In fact, this unit was originally SP 8139.
