After returning to the main from the Rocky Spur, the power needed to run around the six cars that will be returned to Denver. Because the train has two six axle units, they could not wye on the spur. So, the power exited the west end of Rocky, came east through the siding, and is exiting the east end to go back on the main to then head east to North Yard. The conductor is protecting the shove for the engineer, located in the other unit.

The crew on this westbound UP oil train just got off the "phone" (the radio) with the UP Mechanical Desk. The crew asked permission to bring the second unit online as they were concerned about stalling with the sole unit on the point. The desk gave the okay, and the second unit is now roaring to life, spitting out a bit of exhaust as it does so at the east switch of Rocky. Two of the three sun visors on the eastbound signal in the foreground have been ripped off in recent high winds.

Crazy how things change over time. 20 years ago, nobody would ever expect to find an empty UP coal train running over the Moffat. That's exactly what we see here, however, as this empty departs east out of the siding at Rocky after letting the Rocky Mountaineer overtake it. This train will load in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming, and then head west (loaded) on the Overland. The eastbound empty comes east across the Moffat to remove a slower, lower priority train from the Overland.

The conductor on #5 is standing in the door at the rear of the Zephyr, protecting a reverse move out of the siding at Rocky. The Zephyr took the siding behind a westbound oil train. In order to keep Amtrak moving as quickly as possible, DS-78 provided a signal out the east end of Rocky. Once the head end clears the east switch, the train will wait for a signal to proceed west around the oil train.
