A relatively short BNSF Provo-Denver rolls east on the main track at Rocky. At the end of 2025, UP invested a lot into maintenance on the Moffat, including replacing thousands of ties. Many of the old ties are piled up to the left.

I'm always happy to come across a (former) Montana Rail Link unit on a BNSF train. If you are reading this comment and are not familiar, BNSF bought out MRL at the start of 2025. BNSF took over MRL's rail lines and property, including all motive power. The MRL SD70ACes have been shuffled into the fleet, though they never lead, as they are not PTC-equipped.

Approaching a green signal at the east end of Rocky, DS-78 is rolling the dice a bit on taking the Provo-Denver east to Leyden for a meet with the Zephyr. The Zephyr has already departed Denver, and dispatchers would usually hold an eastbound at Rocky for a meet. Turned out the meet worked out great, with the manifest in the clear in time to not slow down the Zephyr at all.

A quick roster shot of the conductor's side of MRL 4306. It is the blue "meat" in an orange BNSF "sandwich" on the Provo-Denver. The train is very short today, so the train has five units on the head end, rather than three on the head end and two DPUs on the rear.

At the west end of Barbara's Gulch, the morning Zephyr is just a few minutes behind schedule as it approach a green signal at the east end of Rocky. AMTK 203, the Operation Lifesaver unit, has spent a lot of time on the Zephyr the past few months, making another trip this morning.

With school complete, as we move into the summer months, Amtrak has expanded the Zephyr to eight Superliners from seven. A third coach has been added, which is quite common with higher demand in the summer. The Zephyr is only moving along at 10 MPH, due to a heat restriction on Big Ten Curve.

AMTK 203 and AMTK 81 lead the Zephyr west at the base of Big Ten Curve. In the distance (at the top), you can see the mainline at Eisele (Clay), where the Zephyr will be in just a few minutes.

A classic shot from Big Ten, as the Zephyr climbs up the north rim of the curve, toward the wind break at the top. AMTK 203, and its very unique paint scheme, lead the way.

I know I added a lot of shots of the Zephyr for this morning, but with it moving along at 10 MPH (due to a heat restriction), and AMTK 203 on the point, I could help by get several perspective. Here, the train is just coming up to the east rim of Big Ten Curve.

The Zephyr has reached the east rim of Big Ten Curve, running alongside the wind break hoppers, which have been sitting on the inside of Big Ten Curve for roughly 55 years now! Each is a bit of its own garden box, with foliage growing inside.
