A UP work train is tied down in the house track at Rocky. A maintenance crew is discussing the plan for the day ahead. Two light units will come out of North Yard later to hook on to the train. Rumor has it that UP's maintenance project on the Moffat is going to stop nearly all trains between 6am and 6pm.

A pair of GEs brings up the tail end of a westbound ballast train, currently in the siding at Rocky. These ballast cars, incidentally, are pretty amazing. They each have onboard computers and satellite link-ups. Each car knows where it is on the rails and how fast the train is moving (when it is moving). This allows the ballast cars to automatically dump ballast at the exact correct rate. As a result of being GPS enabled, the cars stop dumping ballast when crossing grade crossing and over switches.

This westbound ballast train was setup in a 3x2 configuration. However, when it started pulling out of the siding at Rocky, the drawbar on the front of the lead ballast car broke, and the train went into emergency. Fortunately, the train was not further west when it broken, as there is a chance the train would've blocked the mainline.

A westbound ballast train has suffered a broken drawbar. When the drawbar broke, the engines (obviously) pulled away from the cars, putting the train into emergency.

This westbound ballast train stopped in the siding at Rocky to meet the westbound Rocky Mountaineer. After the Mountaineer passed, the ballast train started pulling west and broke the drawbar on the west end of the lead ballast car!

The West Local ran out to Rocky this morning to bring two gondolas of tie plates out to the house track. The local will also take four other gondolas back to town. For the westbound trip, this snoot-nose SD40-2 led the trip. This particular unit has warn UP yellow since it was originally delivered in March 1977!

A single UP ES44AC heads west on the main at Rocky, meeting an eastbound BNSF oil train. The oil train just arrived and is going to tie down in the siding as there is no room in Denver for the train at the moment. The single UP unit has a green signal and is going to continue westbound by itself.

UP sent a single ES44AC west out of North Yard west on the Moffat. While I do not know why, I would imagine it was being sent to rescue a train that had an engine fail somewhere to the west.

Summer afternoons in Colorado are very frequently overcast with thunderstorms moving through the area. Fortunately, mother nature had other plans this afternoon, as the skies are nearly completely clear, offering perfect light for this westbound UP passenger train. The train is headed for Grand Junction today.

The morning Zephyr meets an eastbound oil train at Rocky. DS-378 has already set up a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky, and the train is getting ready to continue to Denver. Meanwhile, the Zephyr passes by the seldom-used Rocky Spur (or Rocky Flats Industrial Lead).
