An eight car work train heads west on the main at Rocky. The train, which has the symbol WNYNYT-27, is headed for the siding at Plain. The "W" at the start of the train symbol indicates this is a work train. The "T" at the end of the symbol (before the date: "-27") indicates the work train is a tie train. As you can see, the gondolas are filled with ties.

As the dozens of piles of ties along the right-of-way suggest, UP is currently in the midst of a substantial maintenance program on the Moffat. New ballast has been laid, and ties and tie plates are being replaced. Not one, but two work trains are both seen in this shot. One work train is coming out of the house track at Rocky, and another came out of the storage yard at North Yard and is headed for Plain.

UP maintenance workers are dealing with a "hot rail" on the main. The westbound Zephyr is approaching, providing plenty of bell and whistle to warn the MOW workers. In addition to the work train in the house track, there is a bit of a gathering in the dirt parking lot as well.

A Union Pacific work train is just getting started on the work ahead. UP 6927 has pulled a few cars out of the house track at Rocky, and is going to leave a gondola on the siding to pick up some more cars from the house track.

The morning westbound Zephyr, running right on time, has just met an eastbound BNSF manifest that is tying down in the siding at Rocky. Black and white seemed appropriate as the Zephyr makes its way through Little Ten Curve.

One of the shortest BNSF Provo-Denver manifests I've seen, comprised entirely of tank cars, is in the process of tying down in the siding at Rocky. The conductor has just set the derail and is walking back to the lead unit. If you are wondering how you can tell this is not an oil train, the lack of a buffer car (typically a covered hopper) right after the lead power is a dead tell.

A relatively short BNSF Provo-Denver has slowed to a stop on the main at Rocky. The westbound Zephyr departed just a few minutes late and is on its way west in Barbara's Gulch. Not quite sure why DS-378 held BNSF on the main rather than routing them into the siding. It is also a fairly short manifest today. Maybe 40-45 cars. No DPUs.

After meeting a westbound coal empty (which is visible in the distance), UP's thrice-weekly MGJNY is ready to roll east out of Rocky toward North Yard in Denver. The train is quite short this morning, with only 30 cars or so (give or take).

Hello old friend! It's been just over two years since I last saw UP 1989, the Rio Grande heritage unit here in Colorado. This morning, it is the third unit on UP's MGJNY on the main at Rocky. Turns out the unit has been flagged as a bad order, and it is making its way toward North Platte, NE so it can be repaired.

UP's eastbound MGJNY is holding on the main at Rocky as a westbound coal empty rolls by in the siding. The coal train will run through the siding without stopping. A ballast regulator and a tamper are tied down on the Rocky Flat Industrial Lead.

Stacks of ties and gondolas of tie plates paint a picture of maintenance in the house track at Rocky. Some maintenance crews are on the end of the caboose (or "shoving platform"), getting ready to start the days work.

A UP work train is tied down in the house track at Rocky. A maintenance crew is discussing the plan for the day ahead. Two light units will come out of North Yard later to hook on to the train. Rumor has it that UP's maintenance project on the Moffat is going to stop nearly all trains between 6am and 6pm.

Some maintenance of way cars are stored in the house track at Rocky, waiting for their next assignment. As part of ballast and tie replacement project UP is undertaking, there are some new ties along the house track. The gondolas are filled with tie plates.

A pair of GEs brings up the tail end of a westbound ballast train, currently in the siding at Rocky. These ballast cars, incidentally, are pretty amazing. They each have onboard computers and satellite link-ups. Each car knows where it is on the rails and how fast the train is moving (when it is moving). This allows the ballast cars to automatically dump ballast at the exact correct rate. As a result of being GPS enabled, the cars stop dumping ballast when crossing grade crossing and over switches.
