Unfortunately, it is unlikely that an MRL unit will ever lead on a train in Colorado, as the MRL units are not equipped with PTC. MRL never installed PTC on its mainlines. The units will likely eventually get PTC installed, but that will likely happen at the same time as a repaint into standard BNSF colors. The predominantly black scheme is closer to Rio Grande than any other Class 1 railroad here in 2025. The unit is a DPU on an eastbound coal empty. This is why so many NS units are showing up on the Moffat lately. The four additional BNSF units were added to the train in Denver. It is very interesting how oil has rapidly replaced coal as the most common type of train that runs on the Moffat now. Lately, NS 4130 has been sticking around in Denver and BNSF has been putting it to good use on several trains. Here, the unit is on the point of a westbound oil train, coming around Big Ten Curve. An empty oil train heads west on the main track at Eisele (Clay) in the background, while an eastbound coal empty sits in the siding at Rocky. The eastbound is waiting on the Zephyr and the Rocky Mountaineer before it will be its turn to continue east. The crew only has until 11:15am to work before their hours are up. Amtrak is slowly repainting their entire fleet of P42DCs. I do not know at what pace Amtrak is repainting the units, but if they are repainting them at an average of one a week, it'll take a little under four years for them all to be repainted. Regardless of the time, the Phase 5 scheme will be disappearing, so get your shots while you can! AMTK 22 is still in Phase 5b paint as the westbound Zephyr passes by on the main at Leyden. This is in advance of the westbound Rocky Mountaineer, now just two blocks away to the east.
