The long hood of BNSF 4729 was swapped out sometime in 2019 when the unit was in the shop. A long hood from a Warbonnet must have been the only long hood available at the time, creating this interesting clash between Warbonnet and Heritage 2 paint. Modelers, go crazy!

Any modelers out there that want a unique, real world paint scheme to try their hand at? How about BNSF 4729? This unique unit originally wore the Heritage 2 (orange and yellow) paint scheme until sometime in 2019. The entire long hood was removed when it was in the shop. The removal of the long hood is quite common as it exposes the entire prime mover. Sometimes, the long hood will be replaced with one from another unit. Perhaps the hood itself needed additional repairs. When the long hood from a unit with the same paint scheme is used, it likely is not noticed. However, for whatever reason, the long hood from a Warbonnet was used on this particular unit.

BNSF 5857 and BNSF 4729 bring up the tail end of BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest. BNSF 4729 is referred to by many as a "Frankenbonnet" due to its extremely unique paint scheme. Sometime in 2019, the long hood was replaced with the long hood from a Warbonnet for reasons unknown.

One of the 19 "25th Anniversary" units BNSF created is the 4th unit on a westbound coal empty sitting in the siding at Rocky. These units are the closest (to date) that BNSF has come to having a heritage unit.

A guest from the north is spending some time with BNSF. Actually, with the recent merger with KCS, CP is no longer a northern railroad. CPKC now covers Canada, the central United States, and Mexico! This paint scheme will be fading in to history in the coming years.

15 years ago, coal trains on the Moffat were ubiquitous and as common as leaves on a tree. However, today, they have become intermittent at best. Even more unusual is an empty westbound BNSF coal train. However, here one sits in the siding in the late morning on a somewhat windy Thursday. The train will be sitting for a few hours to wait for a maintenance window to close ahead in the Tunnel District.

Five units lead a westbound BNSF coal empty, wrapped through the curves at Little Ten Curve near West Rocky. The train is currently stopped on the siding as there is maintenance ahead in the Tunnel District. The train will have to sit here for a few hours, waiting for the maintenance window to be over.

While BNSF mechanical inspects the BNSF coal load on the main at Rocky, which goes in to emergency when attempting to load, an empty UP oil train slowly passes by the coal train through the siding.

Looking past the nose of BNSF 9021, the lead unit on this westbound BNSF coal train, we see the three DPUs at the tail end, just beyond the grade crossing at Little Ten. The train has gone in to emergency each time it attempts to load. You can see a BNSF mechanical truck sitting near the DPUs. It would be determined that a low-hanging air hose was bumping against the plow of one of units, causing the air to be lost and the train to go in to emergency.

The two most common units you'll find on BNSF trains on the Moffat are ES44ACs and SD70ACes. This is an example of the latter. The orange is a bit darker than on the ES44ACs that it is stuck in between.

DPUs have become extremely ubiquitous in the past 15-20 years, and the sole DPU bringing up the tail end of this eastbound UP manifest is no exception. The train originated in Grand Junction and will terminate at North Yard in Denver.
