As the final run of the Winter Park Express Ski Train for the 2024-2025 season makes its way around Little Ten Curve at Rocky, we see a westbound oil train that the Ski Train met at Eisele (Clay). DS-378 has given the oil train a green signal, and it is starting to pull west, out the west end of the siding.

A UP oil train, with four elephant-style units on the head end, is preparing to depart Rocky westbound after spending the day here after one of the unit developed issues shortly after leaving Denver. Meanwhile, an eastbound loaded oil train glides east on the main at Eisele (Clay) above.

A fresh crew for UP 7877 was recently dropped off and the conductor just finished removing the hand brakes from some of the cars on the train. He has returned to the head end and is giving an eastbound BNSF manifest a roll by before climbing up into the cab. It is a cold day for untying hand brakes, with the temperature a rather frigid 12°F (-11°C).

This westbound UP oil empty arrived here at Rocky almost 10 hours ago, shortly after 6am. Due to power issues, the train sat at Rocky for about six hours. A new unit was brought out and was added to the fourth spot on the head end.

The ground at Rocky and all around Big Ten is still covered in snow from a storm two days prior. There is not a cloud in the sky this morning, however, as the westbound Winter Park Express wraps through Little Ten Curve. The Denver Skyline, from where the Ski Train here originated about 40 minutes ago, is clearly visible in the distance, about 18 rail miles away.

The morning Winter Park Express enters into the east end of Little Ten Curve at Rocky about 20 minutes after sunrise. After several days of below-freezing temperatures, the ground here is still covered in snow.

Usually, BNSF's Provo-Denver runs with three units on the point and two units DPU'd on the back. This morning, however, the train is running with five units on the point and no DPUs. The train is winding through Little Ten Curve on the siding at Rocky to meet the Winter Park Express.

It is really great to see all three of these GEs, leading this military train, sporting relatively good paint as they are lined up elephant style. The train here is wrapping through Little Ten Curve near the west end of Rocky. One of the cars on the train has been wreaking havoc with the crew. An air hose keeps coming detached, putting the train in emergency. The train is on the move again here after a 30 minute delay on Big Ten Curve.

A trio of units are on the point of a westbound (empty) oil train in the siding at Rocky. This oil train is a bit shorter than many, and these three units are the only three on the train. The train is waiting for the westbound Zephyr to pass it, at which point it will back out of the east end of the siding and proceed west on the main. The reverse move will be necessary due to a broken switch at the west end.

On an overcast September morning, the Zephyr makes its way west on the main at Rocky and Little Ten Curve. Unit the mid-1980s, the west end of Rocky was actually located near the end of the Zephyr in this shot. It was extended through Little Ten Curve to accommodate longer trains. Primarily coal trains.

Perhaps the coal train that most common coal train to make appearances on the Moffat in 2024 is this westbound BNSF coal load. BNSF has a contract with the Valmy power plant in northern Nevada. The coal train loads in the Power River Basin, and then runs over the former Grande from Denver to Salt Lake City. Five years ago, I certainly never thought I'd see a westbound coal load on the Moffat once, let alone on a regular basis!

On this afternoon, the coal load stalled out climbing Big Ten due to a power issue. The train backed down into the siding at Rocky. The issue has been resolved, but the train has to wait for the Rocky Mountaineer before continuing west.

Can you spot the Zephyr in this shot? While the camera is setup around MP 23.5, the Zephyr is off in the distance at Rocky and Little Ten Curve, about 3 1/2 (rail) miles east. The train will continue west and the next shot, just west of Eisele, can be seen here.
