On an overcast September morning, the Zephyr makes its way west on the main at Rocky and Little Ten Curve. Unit the mid-1980s, the west end of Rocky was actually located near the end of the Zephyr in this shot. It was extended through Little Ten Curve to accommodate longer trains. Primarily coal trains.

Perhaps the coal train that most common coal train to make appearances on the Moffat in 2024 is this westbound BNSF coal load. BNSF has a contract with the Valmy power plant in northern Nevada. The coal train loads in the Power River Basin, and then runs over the former Grande from Denver to Salt Lake City. Five years ago, I certainly never thought I'd see a westbound coal load on the Moffat once, let alone on a regular basis!

On this afternoon, the coal load stalled out climbing Big Ten due to a power issue. The train backed down into the siding at Rocky. The issue has been resolved, but the train has to wait for the Rocky Mountaineer before continuing west.

Can you spot the Zephyr in this shot? While the camera is setup around MP 23.5, the Zephyr is off in the distance at Rocky and Little Ten Curve, about 3 1/2 (rail) miles east. The train will continue west and the next shot, just west of Eisele, can be seen here.

The eastbound Zephyr wraps its way through Little Ten Curve near the west end of Rocky. In the distance (and above), you can see the signals at the west end of Eisele (Clay).

A westbound oil train makes it's way west through Little Ten Curve, out the west switch of Rocky, and climbing up to Big Ten Curve. In just a matter of minutes, the train will be on the main track in the foreground (the main is closest to the camera).

The westbound Zephyr is coming through Little Ten Curve toward the west end of Rocky. Until the mid-1980s, the west end of Rocky was actually located right near the end of the Zephyr in this shot. Rio Grande extended the siding west through Little Ten Curve to accommodate longer trains...mainly coal trains.

I do not have many shots of SD70M-2s, so it is great to pick up one more with this shot. The SD70M-2 was not widely popular, with only 331 being produced between 2005 and 2011. The majority of the units went to Canadian National and Norfolk Southen. None of those 331 units went to western railroads (UP, BNSF, etc). By comparison, over 2,000 SD70ACes have been produced and are still in the EMD catalog in 2024.

CN 8878 makes a rare appearance in Colorado, bringing up the tail end of an eastbound coal load. At first glance, you might (reasonably) assume that this is an SD70ACe. However, it is actually an SD70M-2. Noteworthy as this unit has DC traction motors...something that is almost never heard of on coal trains.

In preparation for the 2024 season, the Rocky Mountaineer's "Rockies to the Red Rocks" is making a test run west. The train is approaching Little Ten Curve, passing alongside a westbound BNSF coal load currently tied down in the siding at Rocky.

A pair of SD70ACes leads an empty coal train east through Little Ten Curve at Rocky. The train met the Zephyr at Crescent and a westbound coal empty at Plain. It now has clear (green) signals the rest of the way in to Denver.

A short UP manifest (only 36 cars) sits on the main at Rocky. The interestingly configured 1x1 train is going to meet an eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver here at Rocky. The train is actually a work train, headed for Plain. UP has been doing a lot of work in the Tunnel District and the gondolas on this train will be used to haul various scrap away.

The only manifest UP runs on the Moffat anymore is the MNYGJ and MGJNY. The manifest runs between Denver and Grand Junction six days a week (alternating west and east). The eastbound version, the MGJNY, runs through Little Ten Curve on its way in to Denver. Up the hillside in the distance, you can see the westbound signals at the west end of Eisele (Clay).

A pair of EMDs, from slightly separate eras, are bringing up the tail end of BNSF's Provo-Denver. BNSF 9356 is an SD70ACe and BNSF 9687 is an SD70MAC, still sporting the final BN paint scheme, the "green and cream" scheme.

SD70MACs do not generally show up on BNSF's trains on the Moffat. However, every once in awhile, they do make an appearance. Such is the case this morning as a "green and cream" SD70MAC, BNSF 9687 (of BN heritage) is bringing up the rear of the train, currently in the siding at Rocky.

A look at the engineer's side of BNSF 4729, which has a weird kit-bashed mix of Heritage 2, Warbonnet, and even a little bit of original Heritage paint! Various exterior panels have been replaced and the panels that replaced them had different paint schemes.
