This eastbound oil train has been told that 31st Street yard in Denver currently has no room for the train, so it is going to tie down in the siding at Rocky. The van driver that is picking the crew up is new to the territory...she drove past Rocky and was halfway up Big Ten when she met the eastbound train. The crew told her she should turn around and go back to the east end of Rocky. You can see the van on the right side of the shot, getting ready to turn around.

The westbound Zephyr is rounding the eastern curve of Big Ten Curve, alongside the wind break. This is the second of three shots from this same perspective of the morning Zephyr. The previous shot is here. The next shot is here.

The westbound Zephyr starts the climb up Big Ten Curve. I decided to take three shots of the Zephyr this morning from this same perspective. To see the next shot, you can click here.

It has been a few months, but AMTK 203 is on the California Zephyr again. The last few trips, it was the second unit. But this morning, it is back on the point of the train.

The westbound Zephyr was delayed over four hours in Nebraska, due to a "mechanical issue", according to Amtrak. Not sure precisely what the mechanical issue was, but due to that and a few other delays, the Zephyr is six hours late as it rounds the bend on the approach to Eisele (Clay).

The westbound Zephyr is getting nearing the end of a 10 MPH slow order and, as a result, both P42DCs are throttling up and they both kick up a bit of exhaust. The Zephyr is on the south edge of Big Ten, and is headed into the afternoon light. A bit unusual to have these lighting conditions for the westbound Zephyr, but it is running six hours late.

The westbound Zephyr has slowed to about 10 MPH to comply with one of many slow orders that have been established on the Moffat in the past few weeks. This afternoon, there are some fast-moving clouds, with shadows moving quickly through the scene. Fortunately, this shot was taken just before the shadow at the top fully encompassed the scene.

Three units bring up the tail end of an eastbound oil train on Big Ten Curve. As has become relatively common of late, there is a Norfolk Southern unit mixed in with the two BNSF DPUs. Several of these oil trains are originating east of the Mississippi on Norfolk Southern. Not sure if that is the case for this train or not.

A trio of elephant-style BNSF units lead a loaded eastbound BNSF oil train through the S-curve on the north edge of Big Ten Curve toward a clear (green) signal at the west end of Rocky. The evening has brought with it partly cloudy skies. Fortunately at the moment, we are in the "partly" portion, great evening light cast on the eastbound.

This is a shot that I have come to really enjoy. The perspective with an eastbound coming around Big Ten with the Denver Skyline in the distance makes for a cool shot. BNSF 5888 is leading an eastbound oil load on the trip east. I think it is interesting that the number boards on the SD70ACe are inverse, with black numbers on white boards.

From the hill between Rocky and Eisele (Clay), we look up the slope at an eastbound BNSF oil train, just coming out of Eisele (Clay) and heading to the south edge of Big Ten Curve. There are some clouds building to the south, although they will not end up resulting in any significant precipitation.

As the California Zephyr wraps around the north edge of Big Ten Curve, west of Rocky, you can see an eastbound BNSF manifest sitting in the siding at Eisele (Clay). The manifest already met the Rocky Mountaineer, and is waiting on the Zephyr next.

The morning Zephyr climbs the north edge of Big Ten Curve, running about two hours late. UP's service road that runs parallel to the track is in very good condition right now, after UP brought quite a bit of heavy equipment up here a little over a month ago for a re-enforcement / construction project on Big Ten.

NS 4130 is actually no stranger to the Moffat. Lately, NS 4130 has been sticking around in Denver and BNSF has been putting it to good use on several trains. Here, the unit is on the point of a westbound oil train, coming around Big Ten Curve.

NS 4130 leads an empty oil train around Big Ten Curve. It is very interesting how oil has rapidly replaced coal as the most common type of train that runs on the Moffat now. Granted, they do not run with the frequency the coal trains once did, but their counts do seem to be increasing.
