This is something of a "go to" shot for me in the mornings as, during this part of the climb to Big Ten, westbound trains are technically headed geographically east, creating great light. AMTK 72 leads a standard Zephyr consist on this particular morning.

Six units lead a UP coal empty up the north edge of Big Ten Curve. It is pretty easy to play the "one of these things is not like the others" game. The fourth unit is a recently rebuilt C44ACM. The unit was an AC4400CW and it received a fresh coat of paint. Looks pretty great, despite being on a grungy coal train.

It is such a cool things to see the same train twice in one scene, like you see here. The head end of the train descends down Big Ten toward an Approach (yellow) signal at West Rocky. At the top of the scene, the tail end of the train is in the OS, about to leave Eisele (Clay) eastbound. The crew has a fantastic view of their DPU!

Don't you just hate it when the unit with the shabbiest paint scheme is the one that happens to wind up on the point of the train. Such was the case with this MGJNY as it exits Eisele (Clay) and comes around Big Ten Curve.

BNSF's Denver-Provo manifest is pulling on the 2% grade west out of Rocky. Although it is not leading, seeing a Warbonnet on the train is a nice sight to see in 2024. Certainly wish it had been the leader, rather than the somewhat grungy Heritage 2 C44-9W that made the leader cut.

Just east of the east switch of Eisele (Clay), BNSF 5804 is looking at a red signal as DS-78 attempts to get the switch aligned for the main. The view here offers a nice shot of the Denver Skyline off in the distance. The train left BNSF's yard right next to downtown not quite an hour ago.

BNSF 5804 is slowing to a stop at a red signal at the east end of Eisele (Clay). The switch is aligned for the siding and showing out of correspondence. DS-78 will try to get the switched locked up for the main. If you are not familiar with the terrain and are wondering about the tank cars in the distance, that is indeed the back part of the train as it wraps around Big Ten Curve. The crew can see the back of the train from this spot.

Two SD70ACes do their best Alco impressions as the units throttle up on the climb up Big Ten Loop. The units will like be redistributed in a 3x3 configuration for the trip back east over the Moffat after loading in Utah.

UP 5804 leads an 86 car oil empty west on the Moffat, on the climb toward Big Ten out of Rocky. You can see the buffer car on the tail end of the train in the distance on the right side of the frame.

The head end of BNSF's Provo-Denver passes by the graffiti-covered hoppers that serve as a wind break on the inside of Big Ten Curve. The matched paint schemes and elephant style arrangement look really fantastic.

The south edge of Big Ten Curve is not actually a curve at all! There is a straight stretch of track that is about 1,500 feet long between the east edge of Big Ten (by the wind break hoppers) and the curve that heads in to Eisele (Clay).

As the westbound Zephyr heads along the straight south edge of Big Ten Curve, we observe the private car Bella Vista, catching a ride on the back of Amtrak this morning.

The sun is shining and it is a beautiful morning as the Zephyr makes its way around Big Ten Curve. The train is passing by the open hoppers serving as a wind break on the inside the curve. Those hoppers have endured a lot of graffiti over the last few decades.

AMTK 18 and AMKT 157 are the power on the westbound Zephyr this morning. The train is running on time, although losing a little bit of time as UP has a 10 MPH slow order out and around Big Ten. So the train is slowly making its way up and around.

The westbound California Zephyr wraps around the outside of Big Ten Curve. You can see the the open hoppers behind the train to the left, sitting on the inside of the curve. The hoppers have now been there for over half a century!
