The head end of this BNSF coal load has entered the main at Rocky as a pair of DPUs bring the tail end around the northeast edge of Big Ten Curve. The train met the BNSF Denver-Provo at Rollins earlier in the afternoon.

An ES44AC and an SD70ACe bring up the tail end of this BNSF coal load. The train loaded in Utah and is now headed east to Denver before turning south and heading down the Joint Line.

Along the straight southern edge of the ridge leading up to Big Ten Curve, a trio of units lead an eastbound BNSF coal load toward Denver. From there, the train will continue south on the Joint Line.

With the Zephyr only three days a week now, it is a bit more difficult to get out and get pictures. However, I was able to do so on a morning following two days of cold and snow! It is only 17°F out as the Zephyr climbs up from Rocky toward Big Ten Curve.

If you are a follower of the site, then you likely know that coal trains - once the most common type of train on the Moffat - have become rather scarce. So it was extra special when BNSF ran a coal empty west up and around Big Ten on this September afternoon. All six units are on the head end for the trip west.

It is a beautiful late September afternoon as six BNSF units lead a westbound coal empty on the Moffat. The train is moving at track speed as it leaves west out of Rocky and makes the climb up Big Ten Loop. This particular coal empty actually originated in Mexico.

Over the summer season, the Zephyr had been running with seven Superliners. That is 1-2 fewer than is typical in the summer season. Now, as we move in to the fall season, the Zephyr has been reduced to only six! The train had but a single coach car on it this morning, seen here climbing Big Ten Curve.

Newer power on the MGJNY on this morning! A lot of times, the manifests between Denver and Grand Junction can attract some older power. Today, however, the train has an SD70ACe, and ES44AC, and an ET44AC on the trip east.

This eastbound UP manifest stopped up at Rollins earlier this morning. They had instructions to pick up the bathtub gondola from the coal train that had its bottom sheered off a few months ago. However, they could not pick it up because the car is currently chained (and locked) to the house track rail. They did not have the key to unlock it. So, the pickup was skipped.

A shot that really puts the "S" in "S-curve"! This coal empty, which has 143 cars and is just over 7,700 feet long, stretches from Big Ten Loop down through Little Ten Loop near west Rocky. The cars are headed for Provo, UT. The exact reason is not clear.

Got tie plates? These gondolas have a ton of tie plates in them, presumable to be used as part of a tie and/or rail replacement project on the Moffat. The crew on this train is headed up to the Eisele (Clay) where it will pick up the rest of the gondolas (in the background) and back down the main to the siding at Rocky.

The morning Zephyr...which is currently the late morning Zephyr, running as #1105 instead of #5, wraps around 180°+ turn of Big Ten Curve. Alas, all of the hoppers on the inside of the curve, which serve as a wind break, are covered in graffiti.

As the tail end DPU, UP 7776, descends down the grade from Big Ten Loop, we can see the head end of the train down at Rocky! The head end is nearly 6,000 feet away by rail, but only 2,500 feet away as the crow flies across the valley. The end of the train is also about 100 feet lower in elevation.

Three mid-train DPUs assist in dynamic braking as this coal train descends down from Big Ten Loop. This coal train has the typical configuration for loaded coal trains on the Moffat, with two units on the point, three mid-train, and one on the rear. These three unis will be cut out of the train when it reaches Bypass 2 at North Yard. The train will continue on with only three total units, the two on the point and single unit on the rear. The fresh repaint on this AC4400CW looks mighty fine!

From a few hundred feet above the ground, the entirety of Big Ten Loop can be seen from Eisele (formerly Clay) down to Rocky. The crew on board, descending down toward Rocky, can look up to see the side of the last few cars of their train and the DPU bringing up the rear.
