A westbound oil train, a bit shorter than is typical, rolls in to the siding at Rocky. The train is in the siding to allow the westbound Zephyr to run around the train. However, the Zephyr is running late getting out of town, and after 35 minutes, the train will continue up to Plain to let the Zephyr run around it there.

UP 6888 was once an AC6000CW, with 6000 HP. However, the prime mover has long since been replaced with a standard 4400 HP prime mover, and the unit itself has been rebuilt and is now designated as an C44ACM on UP's roster. It is also sporting UP's newest paint scheme, which has ditched the flag from the long hood.

A pair of GEs lead a westbound empty oil train through the OS at the west end of Eisele (Clay). Some trees are definitely sporting some strong yellows here at the lower elevations, even more than halfway through October.

The Denver skyline rises above a very light layer of morning fog as UP 6888 and train round their way west out of Eisele (Clay), toward the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Road.

Some of the foliage along the right-of-way is sporting a strong red in its fall colors as UP 6888 passes by. We are peaking through some trees atop Tunnel 1 for this particular perspective.

This morning's westbound Zephyr got out of Denver nearly two hours late this morning. The main reason for the delay was the 3rd and 4th unit in this shot. Those units had actually been sitting in Track 5 at Denver Union Station for the past week or two. They were picked up by the Zephyr here to be transported to Oakland.

It is something of a wild sight to see when the power and baggage car on the Zephyr are roughly the same length as the rest of the train! Four P42DCs lead a baggage car and six Superliners (two sleepers, a diner, a lounge car, and two coaches) up the grade toward Big Ten Curve. The second two P42DCs are not online. They were picked up in Denver and are catching a ride to Oakland.

A quartet of P42DCs on the point of the westbound Zephyr passes by the eastbound signal at west Eisele (Clay) on its journey west. The 3rd and 4th P42DCs were just picked up today in Denver. If you look closely, you can see one door on the baggage car currently open.

With P42DCs potentially reaching the end of their lives on Amtrak, I was happy I had the opportunity to catch a westbound Zephyr with four P42s on the point. The last two units are not online as they were added to the train in Denver and are just catching a ride to Oakland. Still makes for a great shot though!

After meeting the westbound Zephyr at Crescent, this eastbound coal load is approaching the west portal of Tunnel 1. The coal train is shorter than the typical coal train (if there is such a thing on the Moffat in 2023), at only 79 cars.

UP 5799 passes by Blue Mountain Road crossing through the S-Curves below Tunnel 1. A pair of DPUs is visible in the distance, descending from Tunnel 1. The train is only 79 cars long, so there are no mid-train DPUs. Note the new add-on to the Coal Creek fire station on the left side of the frame!
