A relatively small downpour south of Big Ten toward Golden reveals a small hint of a rainbow as a UP passenger special rolls west through the siding at Eisele (Clay). The train was going to stop here to meet the eastbound Zephyr, but DS-378 decided to take the train up to Plain for the meet.

The landscape around Big ten is still very green on the eve of the first official day of summer. While the spring was cooler than normal, and saw more rain than normal, it appears that is behind us now. At a quarter to 10am, it is already 85°F (30°C), and it is supposed to get close to 100°F (38°C) this afternoon. The green is probably not going to be long-lived as we get into the summer.

I really like shooting near the east end of Eisele (Clay). The tracks here run (more or less) north-south, with eastbounds heading south. Thus, almost any time of year and almost any time of day, you can find decent lighting for an eastbound. Such is the case here, as BNSF's Provo-Denver rolls east on the main.

Norfolk Southern units have been showing up quite a bit lately on the Moffat (on BNSF trains). It seems that some of the oil trains BNSF are running originate on NS east of the Mississippi. In this case, however, the NS unit the third on BNSF's Provo-Denver.

Since COVID in 2020, the Zephyr has pretty consistently been running with a baggage car and seven Superliners. A few weeks ago, a third coach started appearing on the Zephyr, increasing the length of the train to eight Superliners. On this particular morning, as the Zephyr heads west on the main at Eisele (Clay), the train is a bit longer with nine Superliners in tow. Granted, the very last car is a sleeper that is just deadheading out to California.

Three GEs, with an SD70ACe second, lead an eastbound BNSF manifest on the main at Eisele (Clay). The train is following hot on the heals of UP's MGJNY, which is currently down at Rocky.

As it waits in the siding at Eisele (Clay) for the eastbound MGJNY, it is really great to see that Amtrak has expanded the Zephyr from seven Superliners to eight Superliners! Amtrak has largely caught up with its repair backlog for its Superliners at Beech Grove, IN, allowing for a third coach to be added to the Zephyr. Rumor has it that another Sleeper may well be added in the near future.

The westbound Zephyr has slowed to a stop in the siding at Eisele (Clay). It will encounter a very brief delay, waiting for the eastbound MGJNY. The manifest is already out of Tunnel 1, and is just around the Bend at Blue Mountain Drive.

It is pretty rare to catch BNSF SD70MACs on trains other than coal trains these days. Heck, even catching one on a coal train is becoming less and less common. So, it was pretty great catching this SD70MACe (rebuilt by BNSF) on the point of this Provo-Denver manifest, rolling east toward a green signal at the east end of Eisele (Clay).

UP's MGJNY is stopped on the main at Eisele (Clay) as an eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver runs through the siding at overtakes the UP manifest. Both of the crews on these trains are short on time, but BNSF is running on less time than UP, so DS-380 gave them the priority to allow them to continue into town first.

An SD70ACe-T4 and a pair of (recently rebuilt) C44ACMs head west through the siding at Eisele (Clay). They are meeting an eastbound coal empty, holding the main. An afternoon storm is slowly starting to move in.

It seems that I have seen quite a few SD70ACe-T4s in the Denver area lately. It is kind of cool to see these Tier-4 units out and running, considering how few of them their actually are.

This SD70ACe-T4 was in the yard at Helper, UT about two weeks earlier. It must have been added to an eastbound oil train at Wash...perhaps even this exact train, and ran east for unloading. In any case, it is now headed west on the siding at Eisele (Clay).

UP's thrice-weekly Grand Junction to Denver manifest rolls east on the main at Eisele (Clay). Three units are on the point, with a single DPU bringing up the rear. The train is comprised of the two most common cars found on the MGJNY, some loaded coal hoppers, and some covered hoppers.

It has been rumored that the Zephyr will have an additional sleeper and an additional coach added to it sometime this spring. That hasn't started quite yet, as the Zephyr is still running with only seven Superliners.
