The westbound Zephyr, consisting of seven Superliners, heads west on the main at Eisele (Clay). The train is right on time. It'll meet UP's MGJNY at Cliff, but UP's DS-380 will keep the train rolling on clear (green) signals.

For you modelers out there, there is a radio tower near the west end of Eisele (Clay) along the right-of-way. The westbound Zephyr rolls by right on time on its journey west.

Fall colors along the front range are entirely complete here at the start of November. Most trees have lost their leaves entirely, although some still have some colorless leaves clinging on, such as this tree near the west end of Eisele (Clay). The westbound Zephyr rolls through the scene on the main.

Shortly after the westbound Zephyr passed by, a herd of elk decided it was time to cross the tracks and head up the hillside. Fortunately this decision was made after Amtrak passed! No other trains were around, so the three dozen or so elk safely crossed the rails.

As the westbound Zephyr glides along the main track at Eisele (Clay), direct your attention up the mountain to the top of the image. Several folks have some great homes at the top of Blue Mountain Road. Pretty fantastic view out over the plains, as well as the tracks.

A P42DC and a P40DC lead the westbound Zephyr on this Thursday morning. The P40DC, AMTK 816, had its prime mover replaced about a decade ago as part of a rebuild program Amtrak ran. AMTK 816 now has 4,250 HP like its P42DC cousins, but still has mechanical air brakes instead of electronic air brakes.

Some trees are in various stages of sporting their fall colors near the west end of Eisele (Clay) as a westbound empty oil train rolls west on the main.

Both Zephyrs on the eastern slope of the Moffat at the same time is a very rare event. It happens once every 1-2 years on average, and can only happen when one of the train is extremely late. What qualifies for "extremely late"? In this instance, the eastbound Zephyr (facing the camera) is nearly 16 hours late! It was stuck in Nevada for over 12 hours due to the tracks being out of service after massive amounts of rainfall.

The westbound Zephyr accelerates up the grade on the main, moving away from the camera, as a 16-hour late eastbound Zephyr waits for a crew member to board before releasing the brakes and continuing on in to Denver, attempting to make up time where possible.

The westbound Zephyr, moving away from the camera, stopped on the main at Eisele (Clay) to drop off a crewman who then walked to the Transition Sleeper on the eastbound Zephyr. Not entirely sure why he took the ride from Denver out here, but back to Denver he goes! The eastbound Zephyr is running almost 16 hours late due to torrential rains in the Nevada desert taking the tracks out of service.

East meets west...but in a very rare location! An almost 16-hour late Zephyr approaches the camera on the siding at Eisele (Clay) as an on-time westbound Zephyr approaches on the main. If the eastbound Zephyr was not late, these Zephyrs would have met somewhere in the middle of the night in the Nebraska plains, hundreds of miles to the east.

This going away shot of the westbound Zephyr offers a bit of a look at modern and traditional rail travel in the United States. The Zephyr itself has the Superliners that have been a standard staple for nearly 50 years. The two private cars on the tail end represent an era long gone, when the railroads hauled beautiful dome cars on their lines.

I certainly wish I could join the passengers riding aboard the Evelyn A. Henry and the Warren R. Henry on the tail end of the westbound Zephyr this morning! The two cars, in their matching paint schemes, look very good on the back of the train.

This spring has been a really time for private passengers cars hitching a ride on the tail end of the Zephyr. Amtrak has increased the price to haul passenger cars and reduced the number of locations they are still to pick up/drop off. Consequently, there was quite a stretch of minimal private car traffic on the Zephyr. It seems that may be over though! Two Patrick Henry private cars are seen here at Eisele (Clay) on the westbound Zephyr.

The morning Zephyr, currently moving geographically north at Eisele (Clay), is hustling along beneath mostly cloudy skies and occasionally morning rain showers as it tries to make up some time heading west.
