I am always impressed that, nearly 30 years after the merger that created BNSF, there are still a few Warbonnets on the rails whose paint is actually still in really great shape. BNSF 766, the third unit on the Denver-Provo, is a great example. Granted this unit is actually lettered for BNSF, which means it happened after the merger in 1995, Warbonnets being lettered with BNSF only happened briefly after the merger.

The sun has already ducked behind the mountains as UP 1943, the unit painted in celebration of the US military, leads an eastbound oil train out of Plain and toward Tunnel 1.

The foliage has reached its peak green levels at Eisele in a beautiful scene as the westbound Zephyr passes by on the main track at Eisele (Clay). It does look like the Lounge car, third from the end, could stand to receive some cleaning and/or polishing.

Amtrak seems to be repainting P42DCs from Phase 5 to Phase 7 paint at a rate of around one every two weeks. AMTK 75 appears to be the latest to get the new scheme, second out on the westbound Zephyr this morning.

May and June tend to be the two greenest months of the year in the Denver area, and May has been no exception in 2024. The Zephyr passes west through Eisele amidst the great green grass.

It seems that the issues that have plagued the Rocky Mountaineer GP40-3s the last two seasons have largely been resolved. It is great to see them running on the point of the train, paint schemes nicely matched to the cars. The train is westbound on the main at Eisele (Clay).

Despite the partly cloudy skies to the west, the sky to the east is overcast and covering the sun as the westbound Zephyr hustles on the main at Eisele (Clay), AMTK 82 and AMTK 60 on the point.

These two leased UP SD70Ms on the Rocky Mountaineer are the exact same two SD70Ms that the train borrowed from UP at the end of the 2023 season. I would speculate that the SD70Ms have been sitting in (long term) storage at UP's 36th Street Yard in Denver. Today, they are leading the westbound Mountaineer at Eisele (Clay).

The Rocky Mountaineer has 10 cars today for the trip from Denver to Glenwood Springs. The train will stay overnight tonight and, per the usual procedure for the train, continue west to Moab on the Cane Creek Subdivision tomorrow. For now, the train is westbound (geographically northbound) on the main at Eisele (Clay).

With the advent of drones, I really enjoy getting shots at Eisele (Clay). If you are on the ground, you have to hike in to Clay. Consequently, I did not have too many shots from Clay prior to about 2019. It's great to be able to easily access in 2024 for this westbound oil empty.

The number on AMTK 59 (the second unit) has definitely faded a bit and is getting a little bit difficult to read...from a distance, anyway. Interestingly, the conductor's door on the unit must not have been latched tight as it appears to have swung open. The units lead the morning Zephyr through Eisele (Clay), which is starting to green up here in spring.

Seeing the California Zephyr on this morning makes me think of the 1980s when the California Zephyr, Pioneer, and Desert Wind were all combined as a single train between Denver and Salt Lake City! On this morning, however, only the first seven Superliners actually have passengers in them. The five cars at the end are all empty as they were picked up in Denver. These are the Superliners that were used on the Winter Express Ski Train this winter. The season just ended last Sunday.

The westbound Zephyr ran in to a pretty serious delay between Princeton, IL and Galesburg, IL the previous day. The Zephyr lost nearly four hours between the two cities. It lost some more time on the journey west, and ultimately departed Denver roughly five hours late. The train makes its way through Eisele (Clay) on the main track.

It looks like UP may have pulled a bunch of center beam flats out of storage, possibly from somewhere in the desert between Grand Junction and Helper. This is a long strand of them on the Grand Junction to Denver manifest. The Winter Park Express is waiting for them to clear, sitting in the siding at Eisele (Clay).
