The interesting thing, however, is that this is actually yesterday's #6. Extremely high winds the day before stopped Amtrak at Fraser. And there it sat for approximately 22 hours! Here, the train is 21 hours late. The Phase 7 scheme on AMTK 174 is indeed the "go-forward" scheme for Amtrak. Amtrak has announced that as both power and passenger cars require maintenance, Amtrak will slowly be repainting them in the Phase 7 scheme. Today, MLK Day, is the first "bonus" day for the Ski Train. It is -7°F (-22°C) and the snow is falling as the train approaches the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Drive. The orange object on the front of AMTK 192 is actually a protective cover that goes over the coupler. It prevents snow and ice from building up in the knuckle, making it easier when AMTK 192 has to be attached to the train in Fraser after running around it for the trip back to Denver.
