Plenty of fall colors to be found here at Blue Mountain Drive, despite the cold winter weather that has blown into the area overnight. Passengers in the two coaches are hopefully enjoying the view as the Zephyr heads away from the camera.

On the first day that truly is starting to have a wintery feel to it, the westbound Zephyr passes through a rather foggy seen at Blue Mountain Drive. A cold front moved in overnight, and the temperature is only 30°F (-1°C) at the moment, with some slight drizzle falling.

Like many products in the United States, the United States military contracts with railroads to move equipment around the country. Here, three elephant-style GEs lead a nearly 7,700-foot train of armored vehicles over the Moffat at Blue Mountain Drive. More often than not, UP military trains in Colorado will run via the Greeley Sub. It was a nice surprise to find this one on the Moffat. The first since 2017!

It is quite impressive watching the energy transition from coal to oil on the Moffat. 20 years ago, the Moffat saw as many as 16-18 coal trains in a 24 hour period. While oil trains have not (yet) become that common, their presence is absolutely increasing. Two years ago, there might be one UP oil train ever two days. Now, there seems to be an average of at least three oil trains every 24 hours. The train pictured is no exception, three UP units leading the train west at Blue Mountain Drive.

In a shot that, at this point, is perhaps rather cliche for the Moffat, three units lead UP's thrice-weekly eastbound manifest across the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Drive on a pleasant September afternoon.

The westbound Zephyr makes its way around the curve at Blue Mountain Drive on its journey west. The train departed Union Station right on time this morning, and made very good time getting out of Denver.

Underneath accumulating afternoon clouds, three elephant-style GEs lead an eastbound oil train at Blue Mountain Drive. Despite all wearing the same scheme, the schemes are clearly in varying states of "wear and tear". the tail end of the train is still on the other side of Tunnel 1 across the valley.

A UP C44ACM emerges from fog with the westbound Zephyr behind it. One of the two P42DCs developed mechanical issues, necessitating the need for UP 5941 to be added to the train at North Yard. The temperature, currently 54°F (12°C) according the hotbox detector, is a welcome break from weeks of heat that has frequently gotten close to 100°F (38°C) in the afternoons.

It is a beautiful July afternoon as a 1-hour-late Zephyr makes its way through the curves just east of the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Drive. While other long distance trains...the Empire Builder in particular...have started to get a lot of ALC-42 "Chargers" on them, the Zephyr is still running with P42DCs. Rumors are floating around that perhaps the new Chargers will start showing up on the Zephyr in 2025.

When this manifest departed Grand Junction, it had four units (three on the point, one DPU) and 84 cars. When it departed Bond, three more units had been added to the head end, and 57 cars had also been added to the train! The 57 cars were from industries located on the Craig Branch in the Steamboat and Craig area. The train is making its way through the curves below Tunnel 1 and at Blue Mountain Drive.

Traction motors issues on the Rocky Mountain GP40-3s have them out of service at the moment. The leaser unit the RM got this past spring is not yet ready as PTC is being installed. So, for the time being, a pair of SD70Ms (Phase 2) are on loan from UP.

The Zephyr is running about four hours late on this July day. Three hours were lost in the mid-west due to severe thunderstorms and flood warnings. In Denver, BNSF 4762 was added to the point as AMTK 174 was suffering from some mechanical issues. Here, the very colorful consist is approaching the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Road.
