Two Federal Railroad Administration employees look out the picture window on the back of this FRA inspection car, checking out the track as the car, led by a UP AC4400CW, pulls west through the S-Curve on the approach to Blue Mountain Drive. This particular car is designated as the T-16, and is one of several cars the FRA has for track inspection.

A quick roster shot of AMTK 161, sporting the Phase 1 Heritage scheme, second out on the eastbound Zephyr. The train got here literally seconds before the sun dipped behind the mountain to the west. Indeed, I lost a bit of light even between the previous shot with the train a few hundred feet west, and here.

The Rocky Mountaineer GP40-3s (rebuilt from GP40-2s) are fit and ready to go for the 2024 season! The matched paint scheme with the rolling stock looks really fantastic as the train rolls east through a semi-snowy scene at Blue Mountain Drive.

It's always great to get a bit deeper into Spring, it is always great to have late running later in the day, allowing for some daylight shots of the eastbound Zephyr as it descends toward Denver. Here, running almost exactly on time, the eastbound Zephyr rolls through the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Drive.

AMTK 198 and AMTK 157 lead the westbound Zephyr in some nice afternoon light. Great for photography, but not great for the passengers as the train is running right around 6 1/2 hours late.

The newest and the oldest Amtrak paint schemes are represented on the two P42DCs on the point of the eastbound California Zephyr, wrapping through the S-Curves at Blue Mountain Road. This Zephyr is running 21 hours late! Indeed today's eastbound Zephyr is only three hours behind.

AMTK 174 (Phase 7) and AMTK 161 (Phase 1 Heritage) lead the eastbound California Zephyr at Blue Mountain Road. The interesting thing, however, is that this is actually yesterday's #6. Extremely high winds the day before stopped Amtrak at Fraser. And there it sat for approximately 22 hours! Here, the train is 21 hours late.

The Phase 7 scheme on AMTK 174 is indeed the "go-forward" scheme for Amtrak. Amtrak has announced that as both power and passenger cars require maintenance, Amtrak will slowly be repainting them in the Phase 7 scheme.

This scene is a very well known one to railfans, including many that have never visited Colorado. You can view nearly an entire train as it wraps down the grade from Tunnel, through the curves and across Blue Mountain Drive.

A fresh layer of powder fell overnight, covering the landscape. A pair of P42DCs pull the five-car Winter Park Express toward the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Drive. Amtrak annulled both Amtrak 5 and 6 yesterday, so there will be no Zephyrs through Colorado today.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Winter Park Express
Amtrak added two holiday runs for the Winter Park Express this year. Today, MLK Day, is the first "bonus" day for the Ski Train. It is -7°F (-22°C) and the snow is falling as the train approaches the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Drive. The orange object on the front of AMTK 192 is actually a protective cover that goes over the coupler. It prevents snow and ice from building up in the knuckle, making it easier when AMTK 192 has to be attached to the train in Fraser after running around it for the trip back to Denver.

The westbound California Zephyr departed on time, but got held up at C&S Junction due to a switch that would not lock up. Now running around 25 minutes late, the train makes its way through the curves on the approach to Blue Mountain Drive.

Three GEs lead a loaded oil train across Blue Mountain Drive through the curves at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. The train will have clear (green) signals the rest of the way in to Denver, although it will meet a westbound oil train already waiting in the siding at Rocky.

Sunlight has not quite hit the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Drive, but it is lighting up the landscape just west (geographically north) as the westbound Zephyr passes through the scene, right on time.

A pair of UP GEs leads a short MGJNY (31 cars) through a (still snowing) winter scene at Blue Mountain road. The first 60% of the train is covered hoppers that came from Potash near Moab, UT. The remaining 40% are loaded coal cars.
