The eastbound Zephyr wraps around the curve at the base of Coal Creek Canyon, having just descended from Tunnel 1. Mother nature can sometimes be cruel. I had selected this location because it is one of the few spots on the Moffat where you can get an eastbound headed into the sunlight in the evenings. Of course, two minutes before the Zephyr showed up, a large, fluffy cloud floated by and obscured the sun. Two minutes after the Zephyr was gone, the cloud cleared.

The (once again) daily Zephyr is moving geographically east even though it is the westbound Zephyr, climbing up toward Tunnel 1 from the base of Coal Creek Canyon. This is the first official return of the daily Zephyr after a near-eight month running of thrice weekly due to COVID-19.

Wrapping around the curve at the base of Coal Creek Canyon, the westbound Zephyr passes by a clear signal at MP 23 and crosses over CO-72. The train will now run up the hill to Tunnel 1 and points west.

A major afternoon storm is developing over the eastern plains on the 4th of July as the eastbound Zephyr wraps around the base of Coal Creek Canyon, crossing over CO-72 between Tunnel 1 and the Blue Mountain Road grade crossing.

BNSF's Denver-Provo moves directly away from the setting sun, as the sun offers a blast of lights just minutes before ducking behind the mountains. The crew will have clear blocks ahead all the way to the Moffat Tunnel and beyond as there is absolutely no eastbound traffic to oppose it at the moment.

Exhaust shimmers in the sunlight as four units work to pull the Denver-Provo around the curve at the base of Coal Creek Canyon and up toward Tunnel 1. Due to a temporary slow order, the train is only making 10 MPH on the climb right now in the midst of the quickly setting sun.

The sun is just minutes away from descending behind the mountains to the west, casting a shadow here on the tracks at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. Fortunately, BNSF's Denver-Provo manifest is snaking through the S-Curves at Blue Mountain and Coal Creek just in time to catch the last light.

Following on the heals of UP's only-remaining eastbound manifest is this BNSF Provo-Denver. The MGJNY is meeting the Zephyr at Rocky and the Provo-Denver here will be taking the siding at Eisele (Clay) to meeting the Zephyr. It is currently snaking its way through the S-Curves at the base of Coal Creek Canyon, on the approach to Blue Mountain Road.

A BNSF Provo-Denver manifest descends down from Tunnel One at the base of Coal Creek Canyon, crossing over CO-72. As is quite common for BNSF manifests on the Moffat, roughly half of the train consisted of tank cars.

Nothing like a gaggle of power, all in a single shot! All five of these units are DPUs on an eastbound coal load. The four in the foreground are the mid-train swing helpers, while UP 6408 (ex-SP 362) brings up the rear.

The head end of an eastbound coal load rolls past the hot box detector at milepost 22.6. Most coal trains on the Moffat run with three mid-train swing helpers. However, this train (which loaded at Energy Mine on the Craig Branch) has DPUs in the middle, as seen in this shot here.
