The westbound Winter Park Express Ski Train has two standard-painted P42DCs for 2023. They are seen here heading west through Rainbow Cut at Plain. The origin of the name for the cut is pretty apparent, as the colors in the rocks in the cut range from red to orange to yellow to blue!

The 2023 Winter Park Express Ski Train leaves the west end of Plain and approaches the east portal of Tunnel 2. This year, the train only has five Superliners (four coaches and a lounge car). Demand must be a little lower for the season compared to previous years.

The westbound Zephyr is about 15 minutes late as it passes the west end of Leyden and crosses over Indiana Avenue in Arvada. The 3-4 inches of fresh snow that fell two days earlier still blankets most of the ground as temperatures have barely made it up to freezing.

One of the original routes that were scouted out when the Denver and Sale Lake was first building west included the grade up Coal Creek Canyon. That plan was ultimately scrapped in favor of the route through the Tunnel District that exists today. Instead, CO-72 uses Coal Creek Canyon to get traffic west. The westbound Zephyr crosses over CO-72 at the base of the canyon.
