The westbound Rocky Mountaineer rounds the curve toward the east portal of Tunnel 1 as it continues its journey to Glenwood Springs. Once there, the train will stop overnight and passengers will sleep at the Hotel Denver. Tomorrow, it will continue to Moab, UT.

On a rather dark, overcast afternoon, UP's eastbound MGJNY emerges from Tunnel 1 crawling along at about 15 MPH. The train has a long string of open hoppers filled with coal on the head end.

A pair of BNSF DPUs are about to disappear in to Tunnel 1. If you look in the distance, you can see the head end of the train crossing over CO-72 at the base of Coal Creek Canyon.

An SD70ACe leads a pair of GEs east toward the west portal of Tunnel 1. The train will have a "straight shot" all the way down to Prospect Jct to ensure the crew can get there before running on of time on their 12-hour "hours of service" clock.

The westbound Zephyr passes in and out of the 366-foot-long Tunnel 1. The Zephyr, coming in at roughly 800 feet, has the engines out of the west end as a few Superliners have not yet been pulled in the east end.

The morning Zephyr is running about an hour late as it approaches the east portal of Tunnel 1. In the distance, you can see the progress on the new Arvada neighborhood called Canyon Pines. Over a hundred single family homes will be popping up in the next few years.

A pair of UP GEs leads an eastbound loaded oil train out of Plain, through the S-Curves, and toward the west portal of Tunnel 1. The lead AC4400CW has a rather faded paint scheme!

The near-record levels of rain this May has resulted in some rich, lush, green scenes all throughout the Denver area. Passengers riding on an on-time Zephyr are enjoying the views as the train emerges from Tunnel 1 and approaches the east switch of Plain.

AMTK 27 and AMTK 33, elephant-style, lead the westbound Zephyr out of the west portal of Tunnel 1. The summer is a great time for this shot when the Zephyr is on time and the sun is nearly far enough to the north to offer a little light on the nose of the Zephyr.

Former UP dome car 7003, now the Charter Club, and St James Place, now both Charter cars, bring up the tail end of the eastbound Zephyr, catching a ride to a destination somewhere to the east.

RMRX 8021, a rebuilt GP40-3, leads the eastbound Rocky Mountaineer "Rockies to the Red Rocks" train out of the east portal of Tunnel 1. Passengers started their trip the previous day, departing Moab, UT in the mid-afternoon. They spent the night in Glenwood Springs last night and are now completing their trip to Denver.

The westbound Zephyr has just emerged from Tunnel 1, with three privately owned passenger cars bringing up the rear of the train. The train is sliding by the fresh development on the new Canyon Pines neighborhood currently under construction.

Climbing up from Coal Creek Canyon toward Tunnel 1, the westbound Zephyr has seven Superliners and three privately owned passenger cars today, making it quite a bit longer than a typical Zephyr.
