This UP oil train is departing Plain on an advanced approach (flashing yellow) signal. Dispatch has informed the train that they will meet the westbound Zephyr at Eisele (Clay) and dispatch is setting up the west switch for the oil train to hold the main. If you look in the distance, you'll notice take cars coming out of Tunnel 4. That is actually a second eastbound train. Specifically, BNSF's HPVODEN (Provo-Denver).

A pair of UP GEs leads an eastbound loaded oil train out of Plain, through the S-Curves, and toward the west portal of Tunnel 1. The lead AC4400CW has a rather faded paint scheme!

Despite how it might appear, this is actually not a meet between a westbound oil train and an eastbound BNSF manifest. Both of these trains are actually eastbound. The oil train has slow-rolled on the main at Plain, allowing the BNSF manifest to catch up to it on the siding.

The siding of Eisele is not used super often for meets. However, on this May morning, the westbound Zephyr is running through the siding to meet with a loaded oil train, rolling east on the main. Note the Zephyr has his headlight dimmed so as not to blind the crew on the UP train.

Slowly crawling toward a red signal at the west end of Eisele, a pair of mid-train swing helpers rolls toward the Zephyr. Once the oil train clears the west switch, the dispatcher will immediate get a clear (green) signal for the Zephyr to continue its journey west.

Meets at Eisele (Clay) do not have particularly often. Eisele is a shorter siding and it has weight restrictions on it as well, limiting what trains can actually meet here. However, the Zephyr is light and short, easily able to sneak through on the siding as it heads west, meeting this eastbound loaded oil train.

Take a look at UP's newest official paint scheme. After two decades of the American flag on the long hood, UP has made the decision to reduce the size of the flag and put it on either side of the nose. Union Pacific is returning to the long hood, and the UP shield is replacing the wings on the nose. This unit is designated as an C44ACM, a rebuild of a former AC6000CW.

An eastbound oil train approaches the east end of Eisele (Clay) in the distance as a single DPU clear the west switch. Momentarily, the switch will throw and the westbound Zephyr will get a clear (green) signal to continue its trip west.

The morning Zephyr is running about an hour late as it approaches the east portal of Tunnel 1. In the distance, you can see the progress on the new Arvada neighborhood called Canyon Pines. Over a hundred single family homes will be popping up in the next few years.

The westbound Zephyr passes in and out of the 366-foot-long Tunnel 1. The Zephyr, coming in at roughly 800 feet, has the engines out of the west end as a few Superliners have not yet been pulled in the east end.

The crew on this BNSF manifest has 90 minutes left to work before hitting their hours of service. Dispatch asked the crew if they could make it the 24 miles down to Prospect Jct in the time they have left if they get a straight shot. The crews response was "absolutely". So, the train is departing the siding at Plain on a clear (green) signal.
