It departed Fort Morgan 30 minutes late, and made up that time (and a bit more) on the way in to Denver, arriving six minute early. While oil trains are nowhere near as numerous as coal was 20 years ago, there still seems to be 2-3 oil trains, on average, every 24 hours on the Moffat. UP 9576 happens to be exactly that! It was originally SP 8112, but was just recently rebuilt as a C44ACM, having its DC traction motors swapped out with AC traction motors. Indeed, there hasn't really been any significant cloud coverage along the Front Range since Sunday. Since then, it has been dry, hot, and still as there has been hardly any wind. Amtrak is actively working to repaint their fleet of P42DCs in their new Phase 7 scheme. No doubt, in just a few years, catching the Zephyr (or any long distance train) with Phase 5 P42DCs will be the focus of every railfan as Phase 7 because the dominant scheme. The first, of course, being a visitor from the north. At this point, however, Canadian Pacific no longer exists. The merger with Kansas City Southern has been official for a little over a year, and the new railroad is now CPKC.
