Amtrak has increased the pricing for hauling private cars and also reduced the number of stations from which they are willing to pick up or drop off the cars. As a result, private cars have become something of a rarity on the Zephyr. This morning, however, the Bella Vista dome car did indeed show up on the journey west. UP runs loaded oil trains very slow, typically coming down from the Moffat at right around 15 MPH. This beautiful June evening is no different. These same two cars actually made an appearance on the back of #5 on this same Thursday exactly one year ago (June 15, 2023). That is what two employees of the FRA are doing this morning as this FRA track geometry car, T-16, follows not too far behind the westbound Zephyr, just west of Tunnel 1. With the 2024 season of the Rocky Mountaineer's Rockies to the Red Rockies starting in two weeks, a test run ran today, heading west from Denver toward Glenwood Springs (tonight) and Moab (tomorrow). The GP40-3s sporting the RM paint had some mechanical issues last year and the RM had to borrow power from UP several times. Two of the five P42DCs and five of the Superliners (on the end of the train) were picked up in Denver. Equipment used on the Winter Park Express Ski Train in the 2023-2024 winter season. With the season complete, the equipment heads west to Emeryville to be put back in standard service. A fellow railfan sits atop Tunnel 1 in a red shirt, capturing the unique scene. The extra units and five of the Superliners were picked up in Denver this morning as they were used on the Winter Park Express Ski Train this winter season.
