When a unit used in yards or on locals, such as this GP40-2, need to head for the shops for an inspection, they will frequently catch a ride on a train, running DIC (Dead In Consist). This GP40-2 is headed back to Grand Junction after an inspection at Burnham in Denver.

A westbound coal empty knocks down the signal at the east end of Cliff on its journey west. Among the consist is a patched Espee AC4400CW and a former Espee GP40-2, catching a ride west to Grand Junction after its 90-day inspection at Burnham.

Railroads will frequently borrow power from one another for any number of reasons. Such was the case on this Sunday morning when a UP SD70M was adding 4,000 horses to BNSF's Denver-Provo trackage rights train.

A westbound BNSF manifest is pulling in to the siding at Cliff. It is meeting an eastbound coal load (which is already waiting for it west of the grade crossing). Unfortunately, it isn't going anywhere for awhile once it gets to the west switch at Cliff due to additional eastbound traffic.

After an eastbound coal load passed by, I knew I had a little bit of time before the next westbound reached Cliff. I took advantage of the time and gained a little altitude on the north side of the tracks to shoot the MNYGJ. I was grateful for the overcast skies above me...on a clear day, the shadows would have killed this shot.

Derailments from the day before have resulted in congestion, delaying the westbound Zephyr a couple hours. Here at Cliff, the Zephyr will overtake (pass) a empty coal train that is sitting on the siding.
