A coal train is approaching the east end of the siding at Rocky where it will depart on a clear signal and wind through the S-Curve that leads to Barbara's Gulch. The train had to run through the siding due to track work on the main.

Leaving Rocky behind, this coal train (with a crew running short on time) depart Rocky and will have clear signals for the rest of the journey in to town. You can see the sign in the background showing crews the radio channel they need to change to (23/23) as well as the new dispatcher (82).

It's not uncommon in winter for trains to kick up some snow...but dust? This is due to all the work being done by UP in the effort to construct the new main track (Main 2) between Tennyson Street and Pierce Street. The old Arvada Siding has been completely taken out and grading is now being done in preparation for the welded rail that will become Main 2. The new Arvada Siding is visible...buried in ballast, toward the bottom and right of the picture.

Despite a bit of dust, these heavy weight Union Pacific passenger cars (the Sunset and the Stanford) look pretty good. These were once Espee cars so they probably don't look as good as they once did, but yellow is better than the torch!

When the loaded coal train in this shot arrived at Rollins, maintenance on the siding meant the coal train had to hold the main line. With the maintenance now in the clear, the westbound Zephyr is coming through on the siding.

The westbound Zephyr has two bonus cars on the tail end today. UP's Sunset and Stanford were added to the train in Omaha and are getting a ride to the west coast. The Zephyr is running about 90 minutes late this morning as it makes its way through the siding at Rollins.

This manifest was waiting in the siding at Cliff to let the Zephyr run around it. As soon as the Zephyr was west of Cliff, this guy got the light to follow him. Unfortunately, the train only made it to Rollins before having to stop to wait for an eastbound on the other side of the divide. The coal train in the shot left Rollins as soon as the manifest cleared the east switch.

While UP is definitely becoming accustomed to using DPU's on their manifests on the Moffat, it is rather unusually to catch an EMD unit as the DPU. However, this SD70ACe was the sole DPU power on this Sunday morning!

Approaching the grade crossing at Cliff, this coal load is slowing to a stop. It is waiting on a westbound BNSF Denver-Provo train which is already out of Crescent. DS-82 had the coal train hold the main because the BNSF train will be stuck at cliff for awhile due to eastbound traffic. And there are westbounds at Rollins and Tolland all waiting to continue west.

A westbound BNSF manifest is pulling in to the siding at Cliff. It is meeting an eastbound coal load (which is already waiting for it west of the grade crossing). Unfortunately, it isn't going anywhere for awhile once it gets to the west switch at Cliff due to additional eastbound traffic.

Railroads will frequently borrow power from one another for any number of reasons. Such was the case on this Sunday morning when a UP SD70M was adding 4,000 horses to BNSF's Denver-Provo trackage rights train.

20 years ago, who would have guessed that one day the most common paint schemes passing through Cliff would be UP and BNSF!? 20 years ago, nobody had heard of BNSF and UP was hardly a mountain railroad. But today, a westbound BNSF manifest meets with an eastbound UP coal load at Cliff.

This is a variation on a well-known shot from Blue Mountain. You are probably familiar with this view of the S-Curves at Blue Mountain. I decided to shoot the curves from further up Blue Mountain road. You can clearly see the difference in elevation as the lead units head south (geographically) as the mid-train DPU's are still headed west. And, best of all, this is an eastbound train!

This was one of those unplanned shots that just kind of happens sometimes! As I was walking back to the jeep, I noticed the train winding through the curves with the crossing sign in the foreground and thought it might make for a compelling shot. What do you think?

It's always good to throw in a picture of Big Ten Curve from time to time! This coal load is descending from the curve and approaching the west switch of Rocky where a clear signal is waiting for it.
