After a lengthy wait of over an hour in the siding at Cliff, this BNSF eastbound is finally on the roll again. This picture was taken from the vantage point of CO-72, which quickly climbs a mountain as you depart Pinecliff to the east.

The conductor for the eastbound BNSF manifest in the siding (on the left) is on the ground right at milepost 37. He gives a wave up to the conductor for the westbound BNSF manifest on the main. This train had some engine problems and the conductor had to walk back to the DPUs. After getting the issue resolved, he simply rode in the DPU up to Cliff where a track maintainer was waiting to give him a ride back up to the head end.

We caught a catfish! If you aren't familiar with "catfish" as a reference to trains, it refers to wide cab Norfolk Southern engines, particularly GE. The white stripes on the black nose resemble the face of a catfish, and thus the name. On this day, this NS C44-9W is assisting in DPU helper duty on this westbound BNSF manifest.

Ironically, when I decided to head west for the Moffat on this day, I was actually hoping to see some UP action! I should have known that, instead, I would find BNSF trains running in both directions. After stalling out (due to engine issues) at Crescent, the westbound on the main has finally made it to Cliff. Its counterpart sits in the siding, waiting for him to clear.

Hurry up and wait! You can frequently hear that said when it comes to trains. The day after the 4th of July in 2015 was no exception on the Moffat. This eastbound BNSF manifest has been waiting in the siding at Cliff for nearly an hour. It is waiting on its counterpart, which encountered some engine problems and stalled out at Crescent. The track (out of focus) in the foreground in the Cliff House Track, which has a noticeable grade down to prevent cars from rolling out on to the siding.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Utah Railway
A rare visitor to Colorado...or anywhere outside of Utah for that matter! Utah Railway 3002 is a GP40, built in 1970 and most recently owned by Kansas City Southern before showing up on Utah Railway property in 2006. It is most likely being moved to Panama City, FL where it will receive an electrical upgrade and a repaint and return to Utah Railway as a GP40-3.

This C44-9W hiccups a bit of white exhaust while waiting in the siding at Cliff. It is on the point of an eastbound BNSF manifest which is waiting on its counterpart to arrive from the east.

After crossing South Boulder Creek, the tracks at cliff parallels the highway (CO-72) for about a half mile. If you look close, you can barely see a truck on the highway. He was considerate enough to (mostly) hide behind the pine tree for the shot!

About halfway through the siding at Cliff, the tracks cross over South Boulder Creek. I decided to try for a new perspective on the bridge by climbing the mountain on the opposite side of the highway. I thought the lighting was going to be a bit better, but I still like the shot.

The MRONY has a colorful consist between the Western Pacific heritage unit and a Kansas City Southern Retro Belle SD70ACe. The train is sitting in the siding at Cliff, waiting for a westbound coal empty.

Similar to BNSF, UP has also been activating older power recently in order to meet power demands. One such example is this "triclops" SD60M, the fourth unit on the MRONY.

The MRONY had a very colorful consist on this particular afternoon. Not only was the train led by UP 1983 (Western Pacific heritage unit), but the second unit out was this (slightly scorched) Kansas City Southern Retro Belle.

Coincidentally, this just happens to be the first Retro Belle unit that I ever shot and posted, way back in December of 2007.

It is rather hard to believe that it is getting close to a decade since Union Pacific's heritage program was first unveiled. The paint on the Western Pacific unit is starting to show its age a bit, although still looks pretty sharp overall.

Even though I never personally had a chance to experience it, I always thought Western Pacific was a cool railroad. I liked their paint schemes and wish they could have lasted a bit longer. So it was particularly great to see the WP Heritage Unit leading the MRONY over the Moffat. Here, the train waits on the siding at Cliff for a westbound.

Just over a week ago, UP 1982 led a westbound rock train over the Moffat. Another surprise came to the Moffat on this day when UP 1983 (the Western Pacific heritage unit) led the MRONY! Here, the train is stopped in the hole at Cliff, waiting on a westbound coal empty.
