An eastbound manifest wraps around the long curve near west Crescent in patchy morning light. Snow has been falling about 10,000 feet, as evidenced by the Continental Divide in the distance.

Due to power shortages, UP has activated all (functional) units on their system. It has been pretty cool seeing some older power, such as this (standard cab) C40-8!

I had originally hoped to head to the high country a week earlier, when more of the trees still had their fall colors. Even though a lot of trees had lost their leaves at this point, I'm not complaining about this shot of an eastbound coal load (with an SD70ACe on the point). The train just popped out of the Moffat Tunnel and will now descend roughly 4,000 feet in the next 45 miles.

Direct sunlight eluded me for much of the morning as clouds were moving through the area. Here, this eastbound coal load is about to cross the grade crossing at Tolland. Note the yellow school building in the background, a staple of Tolland.

Whether you are a fan of UP's paint scheme or not, you have to admit that it looks pretty good against a background of yellow and golden aspens! Such is the case here, roughly halfway through the siding of Tolland.

Fall colors look pretty good at the bridge over South Boulder Creek less than a mile east of Tolland. Fresh snow covers the peaks of the Continental Divide, which this coal train just passed beneath!

About halfway through the siding at Cliff, the tracks cross over South Boulder Creek. I decided to try for a new perspective on the bridge by climbing the mountain on the opposite side of the highway. I thought the lighting was going to be a bit better, but I still like the shot.

After crossing South Boulder Creek, the tracks at cliff parallels the highway (CO-72) for about a half mile. If you look close, you can barely see a truck on the highway. He was considerate enough to (mostly) hide behind the pine tree for the shot!

The classic shot from Blue Mountain Road! An eastbound coal train snakes its way through the S-Curves. Note the new ties lying along the ballast. UP has been doing a lot of maintenance on the Moffat in the last month or so and tie replacement has been included.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Amtrak
Running nearly three hours late, the westbound Zephyr passes by a lot of work on the new commuter rail being constructed north and west of Denver. The Zephyr is running on Main 2, which is typical of most trains between Arvada and C&S Junction. The commuter rail is being constructed parallel to the tracks, and there is a Form B on Main 1 during the day to protect construction workers.

Ten years ago, there were only two tracks along here. The Moffat Tunnel Main (UP's track), furthest from camera and the Golden Sub (BNSF's line to Golden) nearest the camera. UP's Main 2 (which Amtrak is on) and the Arvada Siding are relatively new. UP supplies the coal for the Coors Brewery. UP leaves loaded hoppers on the Arvada Siding and BNSF's "Beer Run" picks it up. Also of note, this is the first shot I've taken from the recently rebuilt Sheridan Blvd overpass.

Yard Shots Denver Rock Island
While looking around Denver for something to shoot, I stumbled across this Denver Rock Island switcher. The Denver Rock Island is a private short line that switches several industrial parks. They have eight units, including this former Espee SW1500.

While waiting for an eastbound coal load to depart Bypass 2, I noticed a westbound BNSF manifest slow rolling by the oil refinery on the Brush Sub. So, I drove along Brighton Blvd and set up for this shot.

After a fair amount of rain in the last two days, this reflective shot of a westbound manifest was made possible. BNSF has been aggressively buying ES44C4s very aggressively. They have nearly 1000 on their roster now. The ES44C4 only has four powered axles. It is an A1A-A1A unit. BNSF 6550 happens to be one such unit.
