This westbound BNSF oil empty is entering the mainline from the siding at the west end of Tolland. Note the yellow schoolhouse on the left side of the shot. This schoolhouse has been a fixture in Tolland for decades. Westbound passenger trains, such as the Zephyr, use it as a marker on the approach to the Moffat Tunnel.

BNSF 9032 peeks out from behind a huge grove of deciduous trees that have reach their maximum yellow/orange. The train is about to knock down a flashing yellow (advanced approach) signal at the west end of Tolland. The Moffat Tunnel is currently venting after the Zephyr passed through, so the oil train is likely to encounter a brief delay at East Portal.

Just west of the west end of Tolland, a UP oil empty makes its way west amongst a sea of fall colors in the last bit of direct sunlight before the sun dips behind the mountains.

DS 378, the dispatcher overseeing the Moffat this afternoon, was unable to get a signal for the Zephyr at West Tolland. Consequently, the dispatcher "flagged" the train by the red signal, giving them authority to proceed by it. The Zephyr will no exceed restricted speed until it encounters a signal more favorable than stop (red).

Even though I wasn't on the correct side of the tracks to get the long side of the train properly lit, who can resist grabbing a shot of a train making its way through a huge grouping of gold aspen trees!? This train is leaving the siding at Tolland westbound after having met an eastbound here.
