You can see that UP has positioned new tie plates along the right-of-way here in this cut between Tolland and East Portal. The work UP has started in the last few weeks are expected to run for the next several months. A lot of money being invested into the Moffat.

A UP maintenance crew has a work window that will last another 75 minutes here between East Portal and Tolland. As UP is investing a lot in the Moffat, many of these work windows will appear for the next several months. In this case, some tie clips are being put in place. Note, of course, the porta potty, being pulled along as well!

A westbound BNSF oil train snakes along South Boulder Creek between Rollins and Tolland. The crew called an approach diverging signal at the previous intermediate. The train will enter the siding at Tolland to wait for the eastbound Zephyr.

BNSF typically runs oil empties in a 3x3 configuration. However, this particular oil train has five units on the head end and a single DPU on the back. Of note, a Norfolk Southern unit is second out on the head end. The train is approaching a diverging approach signal at the east end of Tolland.

Near the west end of Tolland, the evening Zephyr heads east through a sea of golden trees, most of which have reached their peak fall colors for the season.

After meeting the eastbound California Zephyr here at Tolland, this westbound BNSF oil empty is now continuing through the siding toward a flashing yellow signal at the west end. Above 8,000 feet, fall colors have pretty much hit their peak.

BNSF 9032 peeks out from behind a huge grove of deciduous trees that have reach their maximum yellow/orange. The train is about to knock down a flashing yellow (advanced approach) signal at the west end of Tolland. The Moffat Tunnel is currently venting after the Zephyr passed through, so the oil train is likely to encounter a brief delay at East Portal.

This westbound BNSF oil empty is entering the mainline from the siding at the west end of Tolland. Note the yellow schoolhouse on the left side of the shot. This schoolhouse has been a fixture in Tolland for decades. Westbound passenger trains, such as the Zephyr, use it as a marker on the approach to the Moffat Tunnel.

At first glance, this might appear to be a unit covered hopper train. While it is almost exclusively covered hoppers, you can see two tank cars off in the distance. This is an extra train, with the symbol MDVBOX-27. All the cars on this train are headed for industries on the Craig Branch. Normally, the cars would be added to the MNYGJ and the cars would be set out at Bond. However, the sheer volume of cars have necessitated this extra train. A rare sight indeed on the Moffat.

Two GEs and an SD70ACe lead a very rare extra manifest at the east switch of Eisele (Clay). The crew for the train went on duty at 12:30pm. Since UP eliminated hostlers in Denver, the crew had to get the power and build the train themselves. That took the better part of five hours to accomplish. The train is setup in a 3x2x1 configuration, and there are 84 cars on the train.

An 84-car extra rolls west on the main at Eisele (Clay). Of the 84 cars on the train, 81 of them are loaded! If you look closely, you might notice a pair of mid-train swing helpers right at the east switch of the siding right now.

The second of two UP manifests heads west through Barbara's Gulch. This is the first time in I don't know how many years that UP ran two manifests on the same day. Even more impressive is that both ran in daylight. This MNYGJ is headed for Grand Junction. It has 117 cars!

It is just moments before the sun dips behind the Rocky Mountains to the west, although direct sunlight is not apparent here as there are clouds in the western sky. This MNYGJ has 117 cars and is roughly 7,000 feet in length as it roles west through Barbara's Gulch.

The sun has just dipped behind the Rocky Mountains to the west as a single DPU on the tail end of this manifest, headed for Grand Junction, rolls west through Barbara's Gulch. Due to the length of the train (117 cars), there is also a trio of mid-train swing helpers.
