Nearing the north end of Greeley, this empty unit grain train is starting to accelerate as the entire train is now off of the Great Western and on the mainline. It is exceptionally windy today. Those with a sharp eye will note that the exhaust from NS 4004 is actually blowing toward the front of the train due to the high winds.

With engineer Ed Dickens at the throttle, other members of UP's steam team ride in the cab of UP 844 as the train slowly picked up speed, departing the depot at Greeley northbound.

Considering the hundreds of people that were present to check out UP 844 and the Cheyenne Frontier Days train, I was pretty happy I managed to get this roster shot in Greeley with only a single person in the shot!

With its station stop in Greeley complete, UP 844 slowly starts to pull north, make sure everyone is clear of the tracks as it rolls. Starting up, UP 844 lets a puff of smoke out of the stack.

It doesn't get much better than this. Spartan cab SD40-2 leading a southbound manifest on a fantastic, sunny March afternoon. This train would ultimately pull in to the yard at La Salle a few miles south and tie up for the day.

Looks good. Sounds better. UP's La Salle local is headed south on the main at Greeley as it crosses the 8th street grade crossing. The trio of EMD motors, three of which were SD40-2s, sounded fantastic.

This UP funeral train crosses the 10th street grade crossing in Greeley, right next to the Greeley Freight Station Museum. The train was moving fairly slowly by the museum and it drew a bit of a crowd out too!

In this string of 17 tunnel motors headed for retirement, there was a single patched Espee unit. UP 8726 was originally delivered as SP 8526 in December 1978.

Even though it has received a full repaint, you can tell that this was originally a Rio Grande tunnel motor because it has a chopped fuel tank. The space between the lead truck and the fuel tank was unique to the Rio Grande T-2's.

A roster shot of UP 9871 (originally DRGW 5401) on its way to retirement. This unit spent a lot of time in Colorado before it was patched.

A overhead roster shot of UP 2882 heading south through Greeley. This was once DRGW 5342, but has obviously undergone some changes. In additional to being patched, note the class lights and Mars lights have been removed.

As a northbound empty soda ash train leaving Greeley on a clear signal, a funeral train consisting of 24 units heads south through the siding.
