After completing its 30 minute stop in Greeley, UP 4014 and train are now pulling north, continuing to Cheyenne. Due to the incredible number of people gathered, the train is moving along at walking speed. Indeed, two mechanics are walking ahead of the train on either side of the tracks, making sure everyone is in the clear. Once they are clear of the grade crossings in Greeley, the mechanics will board, and the train will pick up speed.

During the mechanical stop here in Greeley, one of the things the crew did was swap out the Colorado flag for a Wyoming flag on the front of the Big Boy. True, we are still in Colorado. But the next time the train comes to a stop will be in Cheyenne, WY.

UP's mechanical crew for the Big Boy are checking over the engine in Greeley, roughly halfway between Denver and Cheyenne. The gathered people are, for the most part, staying back from the locomotive during its stop.

Stopped across the 10th Street grade crossing alongside the Colorado Model Railroad Museum. As you can see, the largest operable steam locomotive in the United States always attracts quite a crowd! Hundreds of people showed up in Greeley to check out the 83-year-old engine.

A string of empty auto racks rolls by on the main track at Greeley, passing by a now-defunct fruit business that has a now-defunct track in front of it that was once used for loading and/or unloading box cars. If you look closely, you'll notice the left rail is flat out broken. This track no longer connects to the mainline at either end, never to be used again.

An interesting northbound highballs a green signal at the south end of Greeley. The train is interesting for a few reason. First, sole SD70ACe on the point is in fact the only unit on the entire train. Second, other than the first seven cars, the remainder of the train is all empty auto racks.

Quick roster shot of the uniquely painted NS 4004, one of the first units to be converted from a unit with DC traction motors to AC traction motors. When Norfolk Southern started the program in 2015, the first six units to be converted (NS 4000 to NS 4005) received special paint schemes to commemorate the conversion. I must admit, I never expected to find one in Greeley, CO!

Nearing the north end of Greeley, this empty unit grain train is starting to accelerate as the entire train is now off of the Great Western and on the mainline. It is exceptionally windy today. Those with a sharp eye will note that the exhaust from NS 4004 is actually blowing toward the front of the train due to the high winds.

Considering the hundreds of people that were present to check out UP 844 and the Cheyenne Frontier Days train, I was pretty happy I managed to get this roster shot in Greeley with only a single person in the shot!

With its station stop in Greeley complete, UP 844 slowly starts to pull north, make sure everyone is clear of the tracks as it rolls. Starting up, UP 844 lets a puff of smoke out of the stack.

It doesn't get much better than this. Spartan cab SD40-2 leading a southbound manifest on a fantastic, sunny March afternoon. This train would ultimately pull in to the yard at La Salle a few miles south and tie up for the day.
