The westbound Zephyr, running just a few minutes late, approaches the signal at CP DS002. The Zephyr, just two miles west of Denver Union Station, has UP's North Yard on its left (right side of the picture) and BNSF's Denver intermodal yard, Rennicks, on its right (left side of the picture). A slew of JB Hunt trailers, among others, wait to either be loaded on a train, or picked up by a truck to proceed to their destinations. The track the Zephyr is on is the only track that is signaled and has CTC (and PTC) in this shot. All the other tracks are in "yard limits" and are not signaled.

The westbound Zephyr passes underneath one of the few-remaining Rio Grande-era signal bridges and searchlights at Utah Junction. The last Superliner crosses over the Belt Industrial Lead, which leads to the Greeley Subdivision. The Zephyr is on the main, and the North Yard siding is now to the left of the train. Note the large number of center beam flats being stored.

If you look closely at the last two Superliner, you'll see the train has just crossed over from Main 3 to Main 2 at the Pecos Street crossover. When coal trains were "a dime a dozen" on the Moffat, you could almost always count on finding at least one, if not two, coal trains here on Main 1 and Main 2. The Pecos Street crossover was built to allow the mid-train helpers to be easily cut out of the coal loads. With coal having all but vanished from the Moffat, these tracks spend most days empty and silent.

A southbound BNSF manifest, coming off of the Front Range Sub, crosses the UP Belt Industrial Lead at Utah Junction. A Warbonnet happens to be second out on the elephant-style manifest as it arrives in Denver. Note the slew of center beam flats UP has stored in the storage yard at North Yard.

Even though it may not be leading, it is always great to catch a Warbonnet on a train in 2023! BNSF 736 has actually stood the test of time pretty well, considering how faded some of the units now are. The unit came down on the Front Range Sub early this morning, second out.

A grain train unloads at Windsor, CO on the Great Western Railroad. UP brought the train down on the Greeley Sub and delivered it to the Great Western, whose crews took over for the unloading. A unique visitor from the east happens to be leading the train!

Starting in late 2015, Norfolk Southern teamed up with GE to start rebuilding some of their older Dash-9s with DC traction motors to AC traction motors. The cost was only 50%-60% that of a new AC unit. The units were designated as AC44C6Ms, and several of them at the start of the series received special paint schemes. NS 4004 is one such unit, currently on the Great Western Railroad, emptying covered hoppers.

NS 4004 has completed unloading in Windsor on the Great Western Railroad. The GWR crew has been replaced by a Union Pacific crew (still on GWR trackage). The train just received word from UP's Greeley Sub dispatcher that the train can continue east and watch for a signal indication for the turn north on to the Greeley Sub.

Great Western Railroad is a shortline that switches dozens of businesses in northern Colorado. The railroad interchanges with BNSF in Longmont and Ft Collins and interchanges with UP in Milliken and Greeley. Due to the volume of interchange traffic in Greeley, in 2016, UP built a full CTC control point to make interchanging easier. In this shot, NS 4004 leads an empty grain train off GWR tracks and on to UP's Greeley Sub at Greeley Jct (CP W952).

NS 4004 leads an empty unit grain train off the Great Western Railroad, across the US-85 business loop in Greeley, toward UP's main track on the Greeley Subdivision. The width of the four lane highway, including shoulders and center median, is approximately the length of one unit!

Nearing the north end of Greeley, this empty unit grain train is starting to accelerate as the entire train is now off of the Great Western and on the mainline. It is exceptionally windy today. Those with a sharp eye will note that the exhaust from NS 4004 is actually blowing toward the front of the train due to the high winds.

Quick roster shot of the uniquely painted NS 4004, one of the first units to be converted from a unit with DC traction motors to AC traction motors. When Norfolk Southern started the program in 2015, the first six units to be converted (NS 4000 to NS 4005) received special paint schemes to commemorate the conversion. I must admit, I never expected to find one in Greeley, CO!

NS 4004 leads 112 empty covered hoppers, headed for South St Paul, MN. For this shot, I am standing at the now-closed Hwy 72 grade crossing. It appears that UP has been making a considerable effort to close as many crossing along the Greeley Sub as possible. I noted at least five grade crossing that had been closed in the past few years.
