An interesting pair of (borrowed) CSX units were hanging around near BNSF's engine house on this particular afternoon. This shot does a nice job of comparing and contrasting CSX's older "Gray" scheme (on the C40-8) with their newer "Dark Future" scheme (on the ex-Conrail SD60I).

Has there ever been (or will there ever be) an engine as amazing as the SD40-2? With very few exceptions, every railroad in the United States, Canada, and Mexico owned at least a few SD40-2s. And now, 40 years later, railroads are still rebuilding them and keeping them on the roster. Granted they are used for switching and local work more often than in mainline service now, but it still cool to see them on the rail. How much longer will that last?

The face of a rare visitor on the left of this picture! CSX units don't show up in Denver all that often...and when they do, the typically are not standard cab GE units. However, on this snowy March 1st, a CSX C40-8 was among the BNSF units near BNSF's engine house in Denver.

It had been a relatively warm December in the Denver-Metro area, up until this (fairly) light snow storm moved in 11 days before Christmas for a reality check! Engines sporting various colorful schemes hang out and BNSFs engine house.

With the recent surge in the rail industry, Class 1 railroads have been pulling out all the stops and reactivating older power. BNSF activated (and renumbered) their SD75Ms and SD75Is, the majority of which still wear the Warbonnet scheme. One such example is BNSF 205 (which, until recently, was BNSF 8205), seen here in Denver on a cold final day in November.

Even though BNSF's "New Image" scheme has been around for nearly ten years now, you can still find a fair number of C44-9Ws (in the 1000-series) that wear the "Heritage" scheme. The scheme, and the "Heritage 2" scheme, were both developed as tributes to the Great Northern, one of the original railroads that merged to form Burlington Northern.

A couple times a year, I like to grab a shot of the engine tracks near BNSF's engine house in Denver, just to see how things change over time. newer GE power dominates the scene on this chilly November afternoon.

Ten years ago, the C44-9W (AKA Dash 9-44CW) was king of BNSF's roster. They had more of these on the roster than any other model. Today, the ES44DC and ES44AC (including the ES44C4) reign king. Good to see the paint scheme still in pretty great shape here on BNSF 4078.

This is something of a rare shot in that there aren't currently any units at the fuel racks to the left of the engine house. Typically, there are several units there being serviced. On this Sunday, however, just a single SD40-2 sits idling away, awaiting assignment.

A sharp looking SD40-2 (wearing the "New Image" scheme) sits north of BNSF's engine house, most likely awaiting a switching assignment either in the yard or on a local.

Okay, so what's the deal? A new BNSF paint scheme that is just starting to be rolled out? Nope. BNSF bought several former leaser units from GATX Locomotive Rail Group (similar to this unit) and rather than spending the money to completely repaint the units, they matched the colors and applied their logo.

One word came to mind when I first spied these three units through the view finder: ouch! The Warbonnet has definitely seen better days, but that Dash-9 in the middle is really hurting. Man, I can't stand taggers...

A scattering of EMD power is not at all uncommon in BNSFs yards. Evening though some of these units are 40 years old, they are still going strong! One unit in this shot, BNSF 2700, has been hanging out in Denver for over seven years now!

Three classic EMD units wearing three very different paint schemes! BNSF has been rebuilding and renumbering several SD40-2s including 1766.
