Okay, so what's the deal? A new BNSF paint scheme that is just starting to be rolled out? Nope. BNSF bought several former leaser units from GATX Locomotive Rail Group (similar to this unit) and rather than spending the money to completely repaint the units, they matched the colors and applied their logo.

One word came to mind when I first spied these three units through the view finder: ouch! The Warbonnet has definitely seen better days, but that Dash-9 in the middle is really hurting. Man, I can't stand taggers...

A scattering of EMD power is not at all uncommon in BNSFs yards. Evening though some of these units are 40 years old, they are still going strong! One unit in this shot, BNSF 2700, has been hanging out in Denver for over seven years now!

Three classic EMD units wearing three very different paint schemes! BNSF has been rebuilding and renumbering several SD40-2s including 1766.

The former Santa Fe "Yellow Bonnets" are definitely becoming less and less common. While I don't dislike BNSF's New Image scheme, I was always very fond of Santa Fe's paint jobs. Here, a Yellow Bonnet SD40-2 sits with a Heritage I SD40-2 near the house in Denver.

Ten years ago you could count on finding SD70MACs on BNSF's coal train on the Joint Line. While the SD70MACs certainly haven't disappeared completed, ES44ACs and SD70ACes have become far more prevalent. Here, a northbound (about to turn eastbound) coal empty is pulling through the yard.

A pair of SD40-2s and a pair of Warbonnet C44-9Ws sit on the ready track near BNSF's engine house awaiting their next assignment. Coors Field can be seen in the distance.

While it might look like a GP30, BNSF 2809 has been rebuilt and is now designated as a GP39M. Meanwhile, what's up with the blue and white BNSF unit? This is a former Conrail GP38AC that BNSF has acquired. For the time being, they simply added their logo to the unit until some point in the future when it receives a full repaint. This blue and white scheme has earned these units the nickname "smurfs".

I'm not exactly sure where this Utah Railway GP38-2 (disguised as a GP35) is headed. but it was just hanging out at the BNSF engine shop. It was originally an Espee GP35 that has been rebuilt, and internally it is now a GP38-2.
