Even though it is Sunday morning, switching at BNSF's 31st Street Yard in Denver continues at both the north and south end, just as it does 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

BNSF keeps a HazMat cleanup train set stored at Denver. It includes this caboose and several tank cars, all painted in this eye-catching, bright-red paint scheme.

As time marches onward, fewer and fewer "green and cream" units remain on BNSF's roster as repaints continue. However, you can still find them here and there. BNSF 9709 is one such example, sitting near the engine house in Denver.

There is a typical sea of orange at BNSF's Engine House in Denver as Sunday morning commuters on RTD's N-Line to Thornton sail by on a bridge. The commuter train is nearing the end of its southbound journey at Denver Union Station.

On the south edge of the small town of Larkspur, a southbound BNSF coal load crosses over the classic "Santa Fe" lettered bridge.

A trio of units serve as the rear DPU on this southbound coal load. The train is crossing over Spruce Mountain Road and West Fox Farm Road as it continues south toward Greenland. Spruce Mountain Road (on the left) is the road that will take cars further south to Palmer Lake.

An ES44AC and an SD70ACe lead this coal train south on Main 1, just south of Greenland. As we get deeper in to fall and closer to winter, the landscape loses more and more color, turning to a relatively flat yellow-brown color.

A southbound BNSF coal load slowly climbs the grade on Main 1 as a northbound military train sits stopped on Main 2. The military train departed Fort Carson a few hours earlier, and unfortunately tripped a dragging equipment detector. The conductor is currently walking the train to find the culprit.

Some US military tanks and other vehicles are being transported by rail from Fort Carson in Colorado Springs to Yermo, CA. They are being shipped on Union Pacific and, due to UP's network, the train will go north to Cheyenne before turning west and eventually south after reaching Salt Lake City.

I love the wide open lands between Greenland and Palmer Lake. A northbound UP military train sits stopped on Main 2 as the conductor is walking the train to look for dragging equipment after setting off a detector. A southbound BNSF coal load slowly rolls by on Main 1, with a trio of units serving as the rear DPU set on the train.

A northbound UP military train is approaching Greenland on Main 2, just north of Palmer Lake. The 14,115-foot Pikes Peak towers in the scene, about 25 miles to the south.

A northbound UP military train passes through the north edge of Larkspur. Unfortunately, the crew on the train only have 22 minutes before they are "dead on the law", unable to operate their train further. They'll ultimately have to stop on Main 2 in Castle Rock and wait for a recrew.

Just south of Castle Rock, a northbound military train has passed through a couple of slow orders and is back up to track speed. But not for much longer. The crew only has 11 minutes left to work before hitting their 12 hour limit. They'll stop ahead near the Safeway in Castle Rock to await a recrew.

A northbound UP military train crosses over Bell Mountain Parkway a handful of miles south of downtown Castle Rock. Way off in the distance, you can see Pikes Peak. It is the tallest peak off in the distance.
